Reading, whether through listening or talking, is an important part of literacy. I currently have five working headphones in the classroom. My classroom is generally very loud when students read aloud or pair read. The addition of headphones and whisper phones will allow me to expand offerings for e-books and audiobooks, most of which are already free, to engage students in finding the right books to read during class time. These texts can also be accessed outside of class, encouraging learners to read beyond the classroom. Headphones will minimize the distraction from small group instruction where I intentionally target reading skills for my most struggling readers. Lifelong readers are created when students feel confident at reading. The use of whisper phones will engage the 25% of my students whose primary struggle is fluency or second language issues breaking down their ability to make meaning of more complex texts. When they can speak into a device that allows them to hear themselves read, they will feel successful at their independent reading levels. Hearing their spoken voice reverberate back through the whisper phone, they can better monitor their own reading. In conclusion, headphones and whisper phones will help target the wide range of reading levels within my classroom.
