Far too often, there is a singular archetype represented in the average children's book. It is increasingly easy to feel alone in a crowded world when kids like you are not represented in generally accessible media or literature. This could be regarding race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, culture, upbringing, religion, heritage, you name it. Children of divorce, or those with absentee parents don't exactly have a character they can look up to in times of confusion. Nor students with disabilities or trauma. We are blessed to live in a melting pot of innovative and brilliant students who come from all walks of life. If that's the case, how can they be so overlooked? It is imperative that we immerse students in reading which is reflective of their truest self. By exposing students to books with which they can connect on a more personal level, I believe I can achieve just that. It opens the door for honest and vulnerable dialogue and gives teachers the chance to show students that they are not the only one who feels different. Moreover that those differences are not something to be tolerated, but celebrated.
