Children see birds every day, but they usually do not pay attention to what they see. The project my students are going to be doing will give them an authentic scientific research experience by helping them become more aware of their surroundings. We will be setting up a community bird feeding station at our school. My students are going to be watching the birds that come to the feeders with the binoculars. As they are watching the birds, they are going to observe the different colors, sizes, and shapes of the birds and use the Sibley Bird guides to identify all the different species of birds that are common to our area. We will collect data each day to show when the different species feed. We will also observe their behavior. Once we collect all of our data, we will put this data into an app called eBird. I want my students to become citizen scientists!! Citizen science is a partnership between the public and professional researchers to solve scientific problems or answer scientific questions. By imputing the different birds we see into eBird, we will be adding to a worldwide database that will help researchers. I hope to encourage my students to become more aware of the world around them and appreciate what they have in their community.
