  • Foster Flexibility and the Independence

    Funded Jun 27, 2019

Thank you so much to everyone that donated. I have been so lucky to experience the impact the flexible seating has had on my students. My students utilize flexible seating most during independent reading and during our reading and math centers. It has helped them develop independence and self-efficacy.

When my students first laid eyes on these amazing seating options, I saw jaws drop and heard gasps and exclamations of excitement. They were incredibly eager to learn how to use flexible seating. Though it has taken some time to get my first graders used to the routines and rules around flexible seating, I have seen how much they truly enjoy using it and how much it helps them engage in our learning activities. My hope is that by the end of the year my students are using the flexible seating options throughout every lesson and through the entirety of the day. I believe as they continue to learn how to choose the seating option that best fits them and their learning needs, they will reach this goal.

Thank you again to everyone that donated, you helped to create such a powerful impact for my 16, wonderful first graders!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Plein

By having flexible seating in the classroom, students are able to make a choice of which seating arrangement is best for their learning. By giving them the independence to make the best choice for them, they will begin to learn how to make appropriate decisions that will make them more successful in the classroom. This also helps reduce the amount of behavior problems that can happen in the classroom. By having flexible seating students have their own space to spread out and have room to work. Having alternative seating also helps with engagement. By having higher engagement students will be more successful. Flexible seating will allow my students to take control over their learning. Students feel empowered by having some degree of choice and control over their environment. Flexible seating encourages movement which will help my students stay alert and focused. I believe flexible seating will help build community in my classroom as well, with the understanding they all share the seating. An uncomfortable student, is a distracted and unproductive student and giving them a choice of what is most comfortable for them will benefit them greatly. Lastly, many of my students have ADHD or ADD and flexible seating provides students with options that stimulate their sense of touch, which can help them focus and process information. Flexible seating is going to be the key to a successful classroom environment in my first grade class this upcoming school year!
