By having flexible seating in the classroom, students are able to make a choice of which seating arrangement is best for their learning. By giving them the independence to make the best choice for them, they will begin to learn how to make appropriate decisions that will make them more successful in the classroom. This also helps reduce the amount of behavior problems that can happen in the classroom. By having flexible seating students have their own space to spread out and have room to work. Having alternative seating also helps with engagement. By having higher engagement students will be more successful. Flexible seating will allow my students to take control over their learning. Students feel empowered by having some degree of choice and control over their environment. Flexible seating encourages movement which will help my students stay alert and focused. I believe flexible seating will help build community in my classroom as well, with the understanding they all share the seating. An uncomfortable student, is a distracted and unproductive student and giving them a choice of what is most comfortable for them will benefit them greatly. Lastly, many of my students have ADHD or ADD and flexible seating provides students with options that stimulate their sense of touch, which can help them focus and process information. Flexible seating is going to be the key to a successful classroom environment in my first grade class this upcoming school year!
