My students are a diverse group, with a variety of interests, abilities, goals, and dreams. Some are going to be first generation college students; some are going to be the first member of their family to graduate from high school! Some are following family members into college and careers. Many students are recent immigrants, striving to master the English language. Over and over, I am impressed by their dogged determination to become highly educated. They do not let poverty, language barriers, living in a crime-ridden neighborhood, or the low expectations of some people hold them back. Navigating the sometimes treacherous waters of a working class high school is challenging to say the least. My students don't just survive--they thrive. They take advantage of every opportunity provided and where one is lacking, they create their own.
