Keep My Library Lit!
Funded Nov 10, 2019We are grateful for your generous donations to our library project. This is our second year doing Units of Study Reading program where students get to choose books to read for a 40 minute period. This is what it looks like.
I teach a minilesson for about 10 minutes giving students a skill (reading all the parts of the word) or strategy (checking the picture to figure out an unknown word). Then I release my students to read independently at their reading level with books that they have chosen. Students read independently for 30 minutes and 10 minutes with their reading partner.
Every year I teach my students always fall in love with the same series of books. My students love the Piggie and Gerald series and fell in love with the Gossie and Gertie series this year. Make these books available in my library means I have to have multiple copies so all students can enjoy these reading adventures. Thanks to you all of these books are now being read by first graders. Many took them home to read over our Thanksgiving break! Thank you for giving my students the extra push in their reading by having access to all of these books! You are all amazing!”

Flexible Seats For Flexible First Graders!
Funded Jun 29, 2018Because of your donations my students get to sit comfortably and read during reader's workshop, share our big fat pillow during morning meeting, focus on our work using our privacy boards, and feel comfy at our desk chair.
We are so grateful for your donations for giving us our flexible seats. My students can't wait until it is their day to choose a seat!
The excitement and light in my 6 and 7 year old students' eyes could be seen as we saw our new materials. They couldn't wait to have a chance to sit on the big pillow with a friend or to sit on the "wobbly" cushions. They also can't wait to use their "office" so they can work hard on their writing or a test.
Our next steps in having these cushions, chairs and big pillow are more social emotional lessons. We are learning to give everyone a chance to use the seats, share the seats and be responsible with taking care of these seats. These are all lessons that I incorporate throughout the day when using these materials. We are so grateful for the opportunity to work together to make sure that other classes in the future can also enjoy these things!
Thank you again for your donations and I can't wait until you get your cards!”

Morning Tubs in First Grade
Funded Jun 7, 2017Thank you so much for providing my students with the opportunity to play in the morning with morning tubs. Once we received the materials, I set up 6 tubs for students to use in the morning. Each morning students come in and instead of doing a worksheet they have the opportunity to play with the materials in one of the 6 tubs.
Each day they get moved to a new tub to experience something new. They also have the opportunity to play more with these manipulatives during our workshop time in the afternoon. I love hearing my students compromise, work as a team, invite others to play with them, and seeing their creations.
My students were so excited to see and play with all of our new things. I introduce one new tub each week and they can hardly wait to use the new materials. As of now, students get to play with dominoes, mini connecting cubes, square disks that interlock, pattern blocks, baby bears, and interlocking building blocks with gears. I'm just as excited as them to put out the new morning tub of the week!
My next steps for my students is to use some the items donated during science as STEM activities. Again, I am so grateful for your generous donation to our classroom! These materials will not only be used by this class but many more to come! Thank you for taking time to contribute to our classroom and bring more play into the primary curriculum!”

This classroom project was brought to life by The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and 2 other donors.Ms. Perry's Math Supplies Project
Funded Dec 11, 2015We are so grateful for your generous contribution to our school supplies. My students love taking out our games during Fun Friday. Not only are they fun but they are educational! They are building math skills as they collaborate with a classmate on these games. As a teacher my favorite pieces from this package have been the magnetic bins for my white board markers and the magnetic place value blocks. This made our math time so much more meaningful and they developed so much more knowledge about place value. Without your donation we would have very limited supplies for our Fun Friday and during our math centers. I appreciate you donating to my little project and look forward to give my next class the same opportunity to engage in meaningful play! Thank you!”

Love Yourself Be Drug Free Project
Funded Oct 22, 2014We all appreciate your generous donation to our school. The students always get excited about Red Ribbon Week and it's a great opportunity for us to talk about it in a kid friendly way. Because of your donations I was able to give my students the opportunity to learn how to be better citizens at school. We also got great ideas for decorating for Red Ribbon Week.
We used the books to learn how to become better citizens at school. So far their favorite book has been The Tease Monster. It talks about two kinds of teasing (good and bad). My students felt so bad for the main character at the beginning which was a number one, because there is only one and unique you! We are in the midst of reading all the books purchased through your donation. They all enjoy reading the books and picking them out from our classroom library.
This project boosted our confidence in endeavoring into Red Ribbon Week in a kid friendly way. I knew all of these books could give my students ideas on how to make smart choices. My students now use phrases like "Words are not for hurting, please don't say that!" I can't thank you enough for giving me the tools to further my students' behavior and enrich their lives with even more knowledge.”

The Adventures of Ms. Perry and Her Readers
Funded Sep 9, 2014Thank you for helping out our little school. We cannot thank you both enough for your contribution to my project. My students love these Mo Willems' books! I hid the books when they came to our classroom so I could reveal them the next morning. Their faces were priceless and their reaction was so genuine and excitable. I could hardly keep track of the books because my students were picking them up, finding a cozy place and reading! It takes amazing books like these to capture my students hearts and engages them in reading.
We are using these books as familiar books during guided reading. They love reading these because they remember each page word for word from when I read them aloud. This makes any student into a reader. I not only want them to enjoy reading but feel successful at reading, and these books are doing just that, they are so confident when reading now. We also use these books to read aloud to the class. These books engage kids and they love all of the onomatopoeia that they get to act out.
All of this excitement and learning wouldn't be possible without your donations. This is my first Donor Choose project and I was so happy to learn how supportive people are in my community. This gave me confidence to keep putting my project ideas out there and see what comes of it. I am so grateful for what you've done for my students. Thank you.”
