Learning a new language as a high schooler presents a unique challenge to my students; they not only have to learn the language, but also must take and pass state and federally- mandated assessments. Having learned Norwegian as an adult, the frustration and perplexity of producing spoken and written language is all too clear to me. I'm requesting 2 Google Chromebooks to provide access to appropriate-level materials for students to read and listen to, that will allow them to demonstrate speaking and writing skills.
True learning requires that students pracice their newfound skills regularly using all of their senses- hearing, seeing, saying, and touching. Total engagement increases skill and progress exponentially in a language classroom. In addition, the federal regulations that require each ESL student to demonstrate English proficiency are all taken on the computer. Therefore, in my classroom, we practice listening, reading, speaking, and writing each day. The addition of the Chromebooks to my classroom gives my students the opportunity to practice their English language skills using apps and programs that are geared to their own developmental level, they are able to have multiple modes of practice on each skill area, and use a similar format to the actual end of year assessment, in addition to regular instruction that is teacher-led. The chromebooks are important because they allow each student to record audio, which our other devices cannot.
Students who are confident in their language skills are better equipped, and more motivated to overcome the challenges of learning English and mastering secondary content.
