  • Empower Our Students to Improve Their Health and Well-Being

    Funded May 6, 2019

We are so thankful for your generous donations to provide our class and the school with yoga mats to provide a safe space for students to relax and center themselves in the midst of their increasingly hectic lives. The use of the yoga mats provides a way for the students to calm their minds and refill their cups to be better people.

When we first received all the boxes of yoga mats from the main office, the excitement among the students was palpable. We had never received such a bounty of goods just for us. As our packages arrived after our intended use for Earth Day in late April and as the testing season was beginning, we reluctantly put our use of the new yoga mats on hold. This new school year we were finally able to debut the new yoga mats for our International Day of Peace event this past September. As we finally unpacked the boxes and unwrapped the yoga mats, it was a gold mine of well-being waiting to be unfurled. We sorted the mats into the carrying bags and prepared for our advocacy fair. So as to not damage our new mats we also prepared butcher paper to lay underneath the mats when we used them outside on the front lawn of the school. It was an amazing event where students were assigned each period to lead yoga sessions during the event. Please view the pictures to see the yoga mats in action.

Our next steps for increasing the well-being of our students will be to secure a regular time and place for Yoga for All. This will be lead by our students who lead the sessions during the Yoga for Peace activity at the International Day of Peace event. Future large scale events will be during the Tree Seeding event in conjunction with our Climate Action Project and Earth Day 2020. We look forward to sharing more yoga activities with our community. Thank you again for your support in making this a reality.”

  • Bringing Global Communication to Our Community

    Funded Mar 11, 2016

I would like to express our gratitude for your donations towards our project. Your generosity has allowed our students to study Japanese and other languages in a multiple of media. As you may or may not know, more than a few of our students do not have access to the Internet at their homes. A few still do not have a smartphone.

With the new tablet, more students are able to access a rich variety of resources that are available on the internet. They are able to practice pronunciation, typing in Japanese , practicing writing the Kanji characters with immediate feedback on their stroke order, and even record themselves on video and turn in those videos through Goggle Classroom.

Our most recent project entailed recording a video of themselves describing a certain location at school in Japanese for our Japanese visitors that we hosted last month. Using an app, they attached that video to a trigger picture on a map (like a QR code) and then their video would pop up. It is similar to the way you use a device at a museum that has an audio recording of each display item. Students were able to use their language abilities to provide understanding to others.

The students enjoyed the project and those that were unable to complete the project without the use of the newly acquired tablet, were most appreciative of the freedom and equity it gave them to complete the project without having to explain why they do not have the necessary equipment. Allowing the students to feel that they are part of the community of learners without restrictions is just priceless. Thank you very much for making this possible for our students.”

  • We Want to Show the World: Starting With Our Classmates!

    Funded Oct 6, 2014

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your donation to our project for the document camera. With your generosity, our students are able to view presentations and lessons, up-close and in fine detail. It has greatly enhanced their learning experience.

With classes up to 37 students, it is very difficult for the students to view the board from the back of the room. Now students are able to view materials and focus on the lesson/presentations without being bored because they cannot see what is going on in the front. With the lights out for the projector attached to the document camera, students are calmer and are able to pay attention and focus on the task at hand. During student presentations, the student audience is more engaged as they are able to see on the big screen, the products of the cultural projects they have researched and created. Opposed to before we received the document camera, we had to pass around pictures during the presentations and students were distracted from the student giving the presentation. There is also a greater sense of ownership and pride as the students feel important and professional as they present using this tool. This has greatly enhanced their sense of worth and will build upon their experiences and future aspirations.

As stated in the student letters, our students are so thankful to you for bringing the class into the 21st century. They are so proud to have such technology in their classroom and happy to know that there are people in the world that do not know them personally, yet care about their education. Hopefully this will have planted a seed within the students so that in the future they can give back to others as you have done for them.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Nomachi

We are a public school in a large urban city. We serve a diverse student population in terms of ethnicity, geography, and social economics. Our students do come from all walks of life and they are all striving to get a quality education that will help them succeed in their future. Most students are neighborhood students, while a quarter of the students are in the magnet program where they chose to attend our school even if it means taking the school bus for 2 hours a day.
