My students are full of energy, being five and six years old, and getting them to sit still while you teach them about reading skills is difficult, so I make it into a game show. We play Beginning Sound Bingo and Beat the Teacher (where the kids have to get more sight words right than they do wrong). Anything goes on our "game show"- as long as I can get their focus on a constructive activity that they do not consider to be "learning." The games and manipulatives I have chosen are meant to further our Game Show time. Using magnetic boards and alphabet letters means we can build words and practice sounding out words. By playing Sight Word Bingo we can practice sight words they know as well as introduce some new ones. Sight words are words that students will encounter frequently while reading and the more familiar they are with more words, the better they do while reading. The other games involve building words or recognizing a letter sound--all of which helps students to build the skills they need to become stronger readers. As a learning support teacher I am in multiple rooms throughout the day; the teacher cart will be used so that I can transport all of our games and materials to each of my classes. This way we can switch games when necessary or for one on one time I have all the supplies I need to help my students grow as excellent readers.
