Snacks for Students
Funded May 26, 2022Thank you so much for your generous donation of tasty snacks for my South bronx middle school students.
Every day my students enter my counseling office for a variety of reasons. In the mornings it can be because they are hungry and because they haven't had a chance to eat breakfast or in the afternoon when they skipped lunch because they were dissatisfied with the food options offered at the cafeteria.
Each time one of my students enter my office, it provides me with the chance to have an emotional check in with them. Having snacks can be their initial reason for coming into see me, but more is revealed with each interaction that I have with them and is an opportunity to deepen our relationship.”

Funded Feb 14, 2022Thank you so much for your generous donation of a year long monthly subscription to National Geographic for Kids to my students.
Non-fiction reading is often difficult for my students, yet it is a requirement for them in their academic classes. Several of my students love animals and we have had long discussions about their pets.
The National Geographic for Kids articles are written on their grade level and are a digestible length that keep the students interested.
My students look forward each month to read the latest magazine issue!
Enjoy the pictures of my most avid fans of the magazine!”

Funded Mar 1, 2022Thank you so much for your generous donation of fancy yarn to my students in knitting club.
When the packages arrived the students were so excited! They were feeling the different yarns and planning special projects to knit. They have each started on a new project ranging from blankets to scarves.
Having a selection of quality yarn makes the students more invested in the final product they are creating. I am certain that they will keep the scarves and blankets for many years to come.
The pictures I sent don't capture all of the hard work that the knitting club is doing, but you get a glimpse.”

Calm Strips! The New Silent Fidget Tool!
Funded Mar 4, 2022Thank you so much for your generous donation of "Calm Strips" to my students.
I have given each one of my sixth graders a Calm Strip and attached it to their laptop. Since they use their laptops all day at school and at home, attaching the Calm Strip to the laptop keeps it handy at all times.
I have already received great feedback on the benefits of the Calm Strips from the students. Here are some direct quotes from the students, "They really work!", "It is cool.", "I use it when I am stressed.", "It helps distract me when something is bothering me." It is amazing how such a simple tool can have such a great impact.
Thank you for allowing to have the supplemental tools to support the emotional well being of my students.”

Attendance H.E.R.O (Here Everyday Ready On Time)
Funded Nov 5, 2021Thank you so much for your generous donation of gift cards to my students.
I have been having individual conferences with my students who have low attendance rates or high frequency of lateness to school. During these conferences, I have been giving incentives with the gift cards to have the students improve their attendance and on time arrival to school.
To receive the gift card I am working on individual goals with each of the identified students. Some students are on a plan with a two week goal of perfect attendance and on time arrival, while others are on a monthly plan.
The incentives are working since the students are motivated by what they can buy with the gift cards!”

"Banana Splits" Books for Students of Divorced or Separated Parents
Funded Jul 16, 2021Thank you so much for your generous donation of curriculum materials to run a support group for my students who have parents that are divorced or separated.
I have been co-facilatating a group each week on Thursdays during lunch and recess for a group of 10 students in grades six, seventh, and eight.
The group has been focusing on feelings that the students have been going through such as spending split time at each parent's home, feeling guilty that the divorce was their fault, and struggles of maintaining relationships with each of their parents.
The group has been helpful to let the students know that they are not alone in their feelings and that these feelings are a natural process of kids of divorced or separated parents.”

Snacks for Students!
Funded Feb 7, 2022Thank you so much for your very generous donation of snacks to my students!
Thanks to you I now have a large variety of snacks to give to my students through the day. To quote one of my students, "Ms. Shapiro has the morning, mid-day, and afternoon snacks to pick you up!".
My students sometimes come to me during first period when they are late to school and have not had a chance to eat breakfast. Other times they don't like the school lunch and pick out a granola bar from the snack bin.
Your donation brings a smile each time a student takes a snack and I feel good that their basic needs are being met.”

Funded Jul 18, 2021Thank you so much for your generous donation to my students.
We have several students who are currently grieving the death of a loved one and the material you provided have been very useful to plan for our groups.
The group meets weekly during the students' lunch and recess period. hey eat together and we do an activity from the books that you donated.
The group has named the group the "Angel Group". I am impressed by how vulnerable my middle school students have been in their shares and many tears flow as well as laughter when funny or positive memories of their loved one is mentioned.
Sorry for not including pictures of the group members, but I wanted to maintain their privacy.”

Each day I have students from all grades in our school coming into my counseling office for a variety of reasons. The students frequent my office most right at the start of the school day and after the lunch period.
On days when they don't eat breakfast at home or when they are dissatisfied with the lunch being offered at the cafeteria, they have increased behavior problems and have difficulty concentrating on academics.
Now that I have a variety of healthy snack to offer the students, thanks to your generous donation, many of the minor behavior and classroom issues are easily addressed.”
