  • Now I Understand What You Say!

    Funded Jan 13, 2025

WOW! Thank you so much for your very generous donation of language translators for my English Second Language learners.

Our school in the heart of the South Bronx has a high number of migrant children and students who are new immigrants to the United States. Learning to speak English takes time and being a monolingual School Social Worker I feel at a disadvantage to suppurt the emotional needs that come with being new to a culture, school and supporting developing friendships with peers.

Thanks to your generous donation of real time language translators, I no longer have to rely on others to be a go between when having conversations especially those that are confidential.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Shapiro

  • Brr...It's Cold Outside!

    Funded Jan 22, 2025

WOW! Thank you so much for your VERY generous donation of warm winter coats to my students in the South Bronx.

Our school is located on the East Coast where winters are especially cold. Many of our students come from low income homes and some of our parents struggle to provide the basic necessities for their children.

As a School Social Worker, I aim to make each child feel cared for emotionally and physically. With your help I can now provide students who come to school without warm outwear a coat that fits them and will keep them warm this winter.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Shapiro

  • ACK All Out of Ink!

    Funded Jan 13, 2025

Thank you so very much for your generous donation of printer ink cartridges for the printer in our counseling suite.

I share the counseling suite with the other counselors at our school and when we run out of ink we had to purchase the expensive replacement cartridges out of our own pockets.

As three counselors teach in classrooms and have to print out lesson plans and worksheets weekly. In addition we print out student attendance records and confidential school plans for case workers that are working with individual students and make school visits regularly.

Thank you again from our entire counseling suite!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Shapiro

  • Keeping Feminine Hygiene Products "In the Bag!"

    Funded Jul 18, 2024

Thank you for your very generous donation which provided my female middle school students with discrete feminine hygiene bags to place the feminine monthly supplies in.

Having your period is a very private personal experience that females manage on a monthly basis. In my office we have a supply of pads for students to take without asking for permission. Carrying the pads all the way from my office to the girls bathroom is a long and public walk down the hallway.

Thanks to your donation, my female students now have a cute discrete bag to place their pads in and continue to keep a personal situation private.”

  • Snacks for "Hangry" Students!

    Funded Jun 15, 2024

Thank you so very much for your generous donation which provided my South Bronx middle schoolers with a variety of snacks.

Students come to my office throughout the day for a quick snack to help stabilize them emotionally or to keep them focus academically. In addition at the end of the day, students line up in my office to get a snack before they go home. This gives me an opportunity to ask them how their day was and make note of who needs a little bit of extra love with a hug or follow up the following day.”

  • Hear Ye, Hear With Headphones!

    Funded May 11, 2024

WOW! I was so pleased so receive the email informing me that thanks to your generous donation my students would have headphones to complete independent classroom assignments.

Students come to my counseling suite throughout the day and I always do my best to provide them with whatever they need to succeed emotionally and academically. At various times teachers assign independent assignments for students to complete and at these times headphones are needed.

Before your donation I was unable to provide my students with this resource. Thanks to you I can now make sure that each student can complete their assignments and become successful academically.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Shapiro

  • Money Matters!

    Funded Dec 4, 2023

Thank you so much for your generous donation of books and workbooks for academic lessons to teach my students financial literacy.

My students are all from low income families and need to learn how to plan financially for their future. Knowing about money and ways to invest, save and manage finances is not a skill people are born with. Not all of my students have role models at home to teach them the basics of how to budget their finances.

Many of my students' families are on public assistance and therefore don't have the financial means to invest their money and save for the future. By teaching my students about financial literacy I aim to help break the cycle of poverty and give them knowledge of how to budget, save and invest their future earnings.”

  • Brr... It's Cold Outside!

    Funded Dec 11, 2023

    WOW!

Thank you so much for your very generous donation of warm winter outerwear for my students.

Many of my students come from low income families and a large population live in temporary housing or shelters. Their parents aren't always able to provide them with the essentials for keeping warm in the cold North Eastern winter weather.

When I have distributed the coats that you have donated to my students in need, they are truly surprized by the gift. The gratitude they express is heart warming.

Your donation has allowed my to nurture my students by supporting a basic need with an essential clothing item.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Shapiro

  • Weigh Away Anxiety

    Funded Jan 4, 2024

Thank you so much for your generous donation of weighted stuffed animals to my anxious and stressed students.

The impact that these animals has made on my students was instantaineous! My students have gravitated to the animals at first because they look cute. Once the pick them up they are aurprized by the weight. Then, they place them on their lap, over their sholuder or simply hug them for comfort. This allows them to calm down and have more open discussions with me during de-escaltions from aniexty and stress or when I am conducting and individual conseling session.

It is truly amazing how a simple weighted stuffed animal can have such a positive effect on my students' mood.”

  • Student in Need of Basic Essentials

    Funded Dec 15, 2023

Thank you so much for your very generous donation that allowed for me to give basic clothing staples to a needy student of mine.

Due to several unfortunate circumstances, this child has been left without the basics including underwear, socks, bras, and pajamas. This child looks to the school community as a source of stability in her life. With so much uncertainty outside of school, knowing that we are a constant support is comforting to her. Thanks to your generous donation, I have been able to provide additional tangible support to accompany the emotional support she receives from our school.

Happy New Year! You make a difference.”

This is my first year working as a Social Worker at a Middle School in the Bronx, NY. I am excited about working to support children socially and emotionally so that they can preform at their best academically. Having social skills are learned, not something we are born with.
