I'm currently sitting in my classroom, a room I strive to make as welcoming as possible for the two hundred students who walk through my door every week, and I'm staring at forty-one, singular chair desks. These are the typical desks that are seen lined up row after row, the kind that face the teacher, the kind that says to the students, "Sit in this controlled learning environment and listen to me." I want to create a student-centered learning environment where students can easily collaborate together and take ownership of their learning. No matter the materials I'm provided, this is an important goal of mine. It's difficult to put chair desks into groups so that students can work together, question and challenge one another, and realize that this environment is "our" space, instead of "my" space. I believe flexible seating and furniture that promotes collaborative learning needs to be seen in high school classrooms just as much as any other grade level. This project will be the start of transforming my room into a space in which students take pride and ownership in their learning.
