  • Keys to Success

    Thank you all so much for your generous donations to my classroom project, "Keys to Success." This project enabled me to provide my contained special education classes with the opportunity to learn piano and become independent musicians. The students were thrilled to receive the materials, and could not wait to begin playing them. Even after over a month of learning, they still enter the classroom asking to use the keyboards.

    It has been amazing to watch the students progress in their piano learning. We began with simple songs, such as "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star," and each student learned how to play four different Christmas carols during the holiday season. One of the best moments during this time was when a student, typically disinterested in Music class, came to me and said, "Can I learn something more challenging today?" I gave him more difficult music and he sat at the keyboard, practicing diligently for the entire class period. When he performed the song for the rest of the class at the end, his pride and sense of achievement were evident.

    These instruments have made a difference in the lives of my students. I look forward to expanding to a full keyboard lab in the future. Thank you so much again for supporting music education and my students.”

The majority of the students have expressed interest in learning to play and having an instrument of their own. Learning how to play piano independently, and mastering rhythmic concepts using the rhythm sticks, will enable the students to have a sense of ownership and motivation in school. In my last school, I organized a piano recital for the special education classes at the end of the year. Students learned performance etiquette, and had the amazing experience of presenting their work onstage in front of family, friends and other teachers. Seeing the looks of accomplishment on their faces as they received their flowers and took their bows was proof that music makes a huge difference in self-esteem.
