Creating the Next Generation of STEM Leaders

Funded Nov 16, 2022

I am happy to share that my students have completed 5 labs so far with the new equipment funded through your generous donations. This last week my students completed a stoichiometric analysis of TUMS. Students were able to determine what type of chemical reaction happens when we ingest tums and determine the stoichiometry of the reaction. They used the newly provided scales to weigh the difference of the reaction mixture before and after the reaction. Find how much gas was produced in the reaction and calculate a percent error to determine any inaccuracy. Students used their new hot plates in March to react Iron with Copper Sulfate and watch a single-replacement reaction in real time. These are all very complicated Chemistry topics that students had the ability to witness in real life and gain hands-on lab experience. Due to these experiences, I saw an increase in test scores!

I am thrilled with the contributions to our Chemistry lab and am excited to create more labs for the remainder of our school year. My goal is to have at least 1 lab per week with my students. I am now hoping to start bringing in some 21st-century technology into my classroom by utilizing Chromebooks and sensors for data collection. I am also hoping to begin an after-school research club, in which I can mentor and guide students through the process of developing and honing their research interest and provide them the tools needed to conduct their very own research.

Thank you all for your donations, I truly believe this is the beginning of something great at Barbara Goleman Senior High. My goal is to create more interest in STEM fields and prepare students for these fields.”

With gratitude,

Ms. Moreno
