My school is on the higher end of the poverty scale. We are grades 6-8 and are the only middle school out of 8 that is blocked for English. My students are considered to be below to average readers and writers. Some of them are very far below average and it's difficult to reach them without some remedial material.
My students are your typical 8th graders. They love their phones, their friends, but English? Not so much. So I promised them that they could type their essays on the computers as soon as I had the resources to print them out (please notice the bright paper!). Until then, they have to compose the essays by hand and interestingly enough, some of them really do need the computer because their writing is difficult to read.
