The resources I'm requesting support and satisfy the very special needs of children with sensory sensitivities and disabilities. Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders, ADHD, or other impairments involving the senses often have a variety of input and output requirements to feel balanced, focused, and whole. Using Susan Culp's book on sensory interventions, my goal is to create a wall of tools in my office that address all 5 senses and their hypo- and hyper- sensitivity shortages. The mixed medium, multifaceted, and intentional approach restores the weary student and makes them available for learning. The items to be included on the wall are velcro, sandpaper, felt, and silk (tactile senses); legos, washer, and bolts; headphones and small chimes (auditory); small bean-toss bags, squishy fidgets, tubes of floating glitter ( visual and proprioception) ; and finally essential oil sticks (olfactory) . I will use this assortment of items to recreate a functional, small-sized-office appropriate sensory wall that can cost over $1500 when bought at specialty stores. I want my students to have access to that resource and I want my students to feel secure in their very stimulated world.
