Calming Area
Funded Jan 4, 2023My students and I thank you for funding our classroom calming area. Teenagers (and really all of us, right?) sometimes need a mental break to refresh ourselves in order to focus on learning. With this project, I have been able to create a calming area in our English classroom.
I set up a little corner in the back of our classroom. We have a boombox and earphones for listening to calming nature sounds or audio books. I created a special bookshelf with a variety of books. Some are of social-emotional interest. Some are soothing picture books. Some are intricate, beautifully designed pop-ups of classic novels. We have a magnetic board with two impromptu magnetic poetry kits, a reverse coloring book, and a lovely box of cards with peaceful affirmations. Students set a timer to track time.
Students can visit our Kennedy Cares center or the counseling office when they need emotional support, but it's really helpful to have a bright spot in our classroom just to take a quick break and self-regulate and then rejoin our classroom activities.”

Paranormal - Cyberpunk - Postapocalyptic - Urban Fantasy
Funded Nov 29, 2016On behalf of my students, I want to express my gratitude again about how much of an impact your donation has made. I had virtually nothing to offer my students in terms of reading for pleasure. Now I have a vibrant library filled with beautiful new titles to capture my students' interests. When my students opened the box and saw how many books I was able to add to our library, I saw a lot of interest, and that is such a wonderful sign because I have reluctant readers.
Twice a week my students read for 15 minutes in class. It may not sound like much, but some of my students have told me they have NEVER finished a book before. It's so important for me to have books available in the classroom because you certainly won't catch my reluctant readers browsing the library shelves. Reading is the key to improving both vocabulary and writing, and it's just plain fun! Or at least that's what I hope to bring to them, and now I can thanks to your generosity.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Mildon
“Reality Exists in the Human Mind, and Nowhere Else.”
Funded Mar 13, 2016My students and I have been delving deeply into George Orwell's dystopian novel 1984. With this DonorsChoose project, my students have each been able to have their own novel to read, instead of using only a copy in the classroom that several classes have to share. As a result we have been able to dig deeply into the novel to examine how the author's dire warning is more important today than ever before. We've been exploring propaganda and censorship, mind control and psychological manipulation, and my students have been relating it not only to the historical and social influences post World War II, but to today and the current issues we face with freedom and privacy in our technology-dependent world.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Mildon
