My students attend a struggling urban elementary school, in a high poverty area. Students in classrooms like mine perform, on average, three grade levels behind their peers in high-income communities. While my students’ math scores could compete with those of other fourth graders in urban areas, their reading and writing could not hold a candle to other fourth graders. Rather, my students’ average reading and writing levels at the beginning of last year fell somewhere near a third grade level; by the end of the year, most of them had grown over one year in literacy!
My students love science and history, and beg me to do more content-based reading with them. They love learning about natural disasters, ancients civilizations, mythology, even American history, when we find the right story.
