Science Is Fun!
Funded Aug 1, 2019Thank you donors for your generosity to my classroom. When the magazines started coming in ,students were quickly excited by the colorful pictures but also the fact that they were able to take these home. Each student had their personal issue to hold and take home.
The website's videos, games and projects were a great extension to readings we were already doing in the classroom. It relieved a lot prep work on my half for each monthly holiday or event. Plus a bonus video and activity to do in class.
I hope to make this extension to my students learning a yearly project. Thank you for the added excitement in my class and reading material my students can bring home.”

Funded Feb 14, 2017Thank you so much for giving my class the experience of a life time. Having the opportunity to observe and record the life cycle of a butterfly, I hope will be a memory that will last!
When my students first saw the caterpillars they were so excited and eager to research information using their IPad's. They were soon giving "me" facts! It was so rewarding to look at their faces and with such enthusiasm and a look of wonder. I hope that some of the pictures were able to convey that. I am very thankful that you were able to help my students experience this miracle. Because of you my students still look and ask questions of the butterflies and other insects that surround us. They even believe every butterfly is their butterfly.
When our materials arrived, the first thing I did was ask how many of them would like to learn more about butterflies. When everyone raised their hand, I shared the great news that people like you who support students and teachers were sending us a surprise package to do just that! Soon the caterpillars arrived and my students were so thrilled, that all they wanted to do was just watch the caterpillars move around and eat. Many wanted to know which end the eyes were. Most students wanted to research more, and even found different kinds of caterpillars and how they were different from ours.
I used the caterpillars as motivation for my students to finish their work. Students enjoyed their extra time just watching our new friends when their work was finished. Soon we moved them into the net; this only increased their curiosity when they were now chrysalis. During this stage we were so intrigued because the caterpillars crawled around the newly formed chrysalis and then would start to wiggle. It was just fascinating, new behavior brought new questions. When the butterflies emerged the students were amazed that they were ready to fly and enjoyed watching them flutter around the net. I am sure this was the closest many of them had being so close to these beautiful creatures.
During this time we also read the book "Monarch Butterfly" by Gail Gibbons, another one of your generous gifts. This helped us prepare for the many stages my students were about to experience. Since all of our butterflies successfully emerged, we set them free in our school garden. It was such delight and a life experience for me as a teacher to be able to look at my students and the joy they had while we were being set free. I did have some students that were sad, because we were unable to keep them. However my other students explained it was what was best for butterflies. To help ease the worry of not having the butterflies we ended our unit with the butterfly craft, again another gift from you. Now when walking on campus students enjoy "their" butterflies coming to visit!
