Small group instruction is a large focus in my classroom. Teaching to first graders means teaching to students with a wide range of academic ability. When six and seven year olds enter my classroom each August, some can read a chapter book while others don't know their ABC's or letter sounds. Many students may be familiar with numbers beyond 50 and others are still working between 1 and 10. Getting to assess and place students into groups with similar needs is what makes my classroom run smoothly and helps my students be so successful! However, while I'm teaching to 3-6 students in a small group at their academic level, that means the rest of my students are working independently. I differentiate all of my independent activities in my classroom to meet the needs of every student and help them find success. The drawback? I'm not next to them helping or pointing out any mistakes they may make! I want their independent activities to not only be differentiated, but meaningful. For that reason, Osmos are an excellent resource! Osmos give students the opportunity to self-correct all on their own while taking ownership for their mistakes. They allow students to work with technology our school already has and Osmos has different activities for a variety of subject areas. The best part? Osmos are engaging, hands-on and fun for students! By donating to our project, you're helping meet the needs of students of all academic levels in my classroom! Their confidence, happiness and success are always the best "thank you" I can get. So picture me and my kiddos with a big ol' smile on our faces and know your support is beyond appreciated!
