  • Where Should I Sit? Flexible Seating for 4th Grade Class

    Funded Aug 14, 2017

My students and I want to thank you for your generous support towards the learning and community of our classroom. When my students walked into the classroom on the first day of school they were incredibly excited to see the tent and bean bag chairs. Since then, we have slowly rolled out all of the accessible seating options and each item is used every day.

Students have a bean bag chair schedule to which they religiously adhere; checking it each morning and then grabbing a clipboard to do their work when it is their turn. Students share the ball chairs; some need it as the full replacement of their chair, while others use it more randomly - we are flexible. The tent is used as a quiet working or reading space or as a place to hide from the world and calm and regulate our emotions. During read aloud, students sit or lay around me on bean bag chairs and wobble cushions.

I have included one "Thank You" note written by a student, but here are quotes from others: "Thank you for the ball chair because it is my favorite. They are really comfortable," "Thank for the stools and they have us learn," "Thank you for the bean bag chair because they make us relax," "Thank you for the ball chair and everything. I love class 216 more."

Thank you for making it possible for me to say at the end of a lesson, "Okay, find a comfortable seat and get to work!"”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Smith

Flexible seating options will improve my students' engagement throughout the day in all subject areas. My students struggle staying still and calm for extended periods of time. These seating options will improve their attention, interest, and excitement for each activity. My goal is to create a truly inclusive space in my self-contained classroom. Flexible seating creates options, encourages choice and and self-advocacy, and increases accessibility to the subject matter. They will be able to transition from a bean bag chair for reading, to a bouncy chair for math, to the tent for a break, to a wobble cushion for read aloud. My students have a variety of sensory and emotional needs and would benefit from having more options throughout the day. With improved engagement these seating options will provide, my students will be able to be more successful and happy in the classroom.
