At my little hidden gym of a school in Charlotte, we understand the importance of peacefulness and mindfulness. These are things young minds often struggle with, given our chaotic world and stressful, jam-packed schedules. We stress the importance of movement in and out of the classroom, and peacefulness to help us understand, explore, and express our emotions. This helps students on a social/emotional level and helps them to manage their emotions enough to be successful academically. To us wellness means mental wellness, emotional wellness, physical wellness, and academic success.
Bringing yoga to our After School program would provide students the opportunity to learn the power and strength of their bodies, the power of meditation, and the power and influence their thoughts have over their emotions & physical body's. The benefits of yoga for children (and adults alike) include:
- developing body awareness
- learning how to use their bodies in a healthy way
- strengthens muscles, mobility, and flexibility
- managing stress through breathing, awareness, meditation and -healthy movement
- building concentration
- increasing their confidence and positive self-image
- allows students to feel a part of a healthy, non-competitive group
- provides an alternative to tuning out through constant attachment to electronic devices
...and the list goes on...
I would love to practice and learn with my students as we become more mindful and peaceful individuals. We will need yoga mats, yoga blocks & straps as we work on our flexibility, and sanitizer to keep our practice safe & clean. If you are able, please help contribute to make Yoga Club a part of the After School programs we offer here at Veritas.
