One of the most important goals in my classroom is for all of my students to leave with effective verbal communication skills. My high school students verbal communication abilities range from emerging English Language Learners to advanced native speakers, and to best prepare ALL students for the post secondary option of their choice I need to make sure they have effective language practice. Whether its arguing about the form of resistance used by Childish Gambino's in his song "This is America" in American Literature, examining the importance of intersectionality in Women's Literature, or discussing the conceit in a metaphysical poem by John Donne in AP English Literature, every academic discussion counts! I have found that no matter the skill level the more opportunities students are given to engage in formal academic discourse the stronger and more effective their discourse becomes. With the added technology of an iPad and a Swivl Robotic Platform for video, I will be able to empower more students to engage in conversation as well as assess more simultaneous academic discussion circles. By using both devices together, I can oversee and reflect on the academic discussions of multiple student groups at once in order to help them become their best conversational selves. Additionally, students will be able to view their discussions and evaluate their own communication skills! These tools will help ALL of my students to be prepared for university, the workforce, and as an engaged member of their community!
