Listening Center
Funded Jun 15, 2016As adolescents make the transition into adulthood, they are increasingly aware of how they learn best. As a middle school teacher, it is my goal to provide as many avenues to learning as possible so that they may explore these different methods and determine what works best for them. With the generous donation of headphones, students who learn best through auditory or kinesthetic activities will thrive with the addition of a listening center.
In our class, headphones are used in learning stations and learning centers. At these stations and centers, students have an opportunity to listen to speeches, historical texts/documents or view tutorials or video clips. The headphones allow students to listen without distractions and remain focused on the task they must complete as they listen or view. The use of headphones in our classroom also allows students the opportunity to monitor their own learning and understanding: when you listen to a text or view a clip with a whole class, you do not have the opportunity to pause or replay anything that was missed. With these headphones, students are given independence and can control the audio or video as they need.
We are very grateful for this gift and agree that the use of headphones in class will enhance learning and instruction. Integrating technology and classroom instruction has proved to be a successful venture and we are very pleased with the results. We are very grateful for the generous donors who have made this venture possible!”

Digital Historians
Funded Apr 25, 2016The 21st century learner is creative, innovative and collaborative. Using iPads and other technologies in the classroom is an effective way to engage the 21st century learner. With the iPads, teachers can capitalize on students' extraordinary capabilities in using technology to express their ideas, communicate with others and create multimedia products that demonstrate what they have learned. With the iPads, I have observed an increase in interest, engagement and participation in class. Students were excited to come to class and eager to use the iPads. Technology made learning about history fun and exciting!
In class, students used the iPads for a variety of activities that proved to be engaging. Students blogged about history discussing images and videos posted by teachers. They were often immersed in fruitful online discussions that extended well past the school day and into the evening during homework hours I was also able to differentiate instruction for students by allowing them to independently watch short videos and take notes giving students the control to pause or rewind videos for their own note taking purposes. Students also used the iPads to create one-take videos: videos combining voice overs and images to explain a historical concept or event.
Integrating technology and classroom instruction has proved to be a successful venture and we are very pleased with the results. We are very grateful for the generous donors who have made this venture possible!”
