These copies of 1984 will welcome my students to the world of novel study! They have never read a whole novel as part of any class, and tackling a complete text like 1984 will enrich and deepen their experience of literature. This whole-class set of books is just the beginning! Once we have the foundational novel for our dystopian unity of study, students will have the opportunity to select one of 8 carefully chosen novels to read outside of class, which leads the students to compare the novels, strengthening their connection to and engagement in the content. My campus is a personalized learning school, so it's essential to provide students with voice and choice in their readings & in their approach to texts. However, we will use 1984 as our model for approaching a novel; learning how to interpret and analyze using a common text will scaffold students' ability to access to their choice novels.
