My students are 4th graders who live in a low socioeconomic area. Nearly 79% of them receive free or reduced lunch and over half of them are in special programs to improve fluency and comprehension skills. Math is an exciting time for my students because it doesn't require them to read long passages and interpret what what they are reading. However, for many of them, the concepts taught are difficult for them to understand. Using hands-on materials, will help my students develop conceptual understanding of what they are learning. My hope is that students will learn and understand math rules more quickly through the use of these manipulatives and be less confused. Also, these manipulatives will help make mathematics meaningful and provide various paths to solving problems.
