  • Flexible Seating for Flexible Learners

    Funded Oct 14, 2019

My students and I are grateful for this new classroom resource. The lap desks and cushions for sitting for have made a noticeable, positive impact in the flow of lessons and students' engagement.

This is more obvious during the independent practice portion of the lesson. Students are excited about practicing what they learned. They get to choose a comfortable spot in the classroom and a lap desk to work.

I wish I had more lap desks. They often rush to be the first to get a lap desk to do the independent work. They are engaged and focused while using lap desks to complete their independent work. I might have to create a weekly schedule to indicate who gets to use the lap desk each day.

    Once again,

Thank you so much, your support means a lot.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Mateo

  • Great Thinkers Need Drawing Boards

    Funded Aug 5, 2019

I want to wholeheartedly Thank you for your donations. My students were very excited about the new dry erase boards and markers we received. One of my students said, "They are baby boards!" It Makes me happy to see them excited about using new tools to learn.

This resource increased the level of engagement during lessons by giving each student a private space to show their thinking before sharing with classmates. We were working on adding two digit numbers and students were asked to be flexible thinkers and to try to solve the math questions in different ways. Students got to work! They used different strategies to solve. They showed them on the dry erase boards. And lastly they shared their strategy or strategies with a class mate. It was fulfilling! ( As I say this there is a big smile across my face.)

I will continue these boards as a resource to increase the level of cognitive engagement during lessons.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Mateo

Wipe boards are great tools for math. When students are challenged with a math question and are presented with a board to show their thinking, they have the opportunity to think, solve and show before sharing with classmates and the teacher. Dry-erase boards empower students to focus on their own ways to solve a given math question. When students are expected to show their math thinking, they become more critical and reflective of their strategies. They become their own teacher by choosing strategies that might yell more appropriate and logical results. When students show their thinking on dry erase boards, teachers can do a quick assessment and provide students with prompt constructive questions or suggestions.
