  • Seeing Yourself in Literature: Great Books for Middle Schoolers

    Funded Aug 13, 2019

I am blown away by your generosity. Thanks to your donations, many new and inclusive books were delivered to our classroom. So many of the books deal with responsibilities, struggles, and challenges that my middle-schoolers face as pre-teens and young adults. Students are able to visualize themselves in characters as they overcome the problems in the story.

The books have also been helpful in teaching skills such as character traits, plot and events, themes across several sources, and context clues in vocabulary.

Reading is an important piece of our classroom. We read aloud and listen to texts, students read to partners or groups, and students are always encouraged to borrow books to read on their own.

Our classroom library is growing, slowly but surely, and it is all thanks to you. Thank you for supporting my students!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Marchiondo

  • Storage and Organization for Middle Schoolers

    Funded Aug 14, 2019

You did it!! Your donations have helped to purchase so many needed materials for the classroom. Bookshelves, book boxes, pencil cases, clipboards, and earbuds have been delivered to the classroom. Students use these resources EVERY day - not one resource is going to waste.

The students have been so excited to decorate their book boxes and have a place where they can keep all materials without losing them. For many middle schoolers, getting organized can be the biggest they challenge as they transition to upper grades. Having materials organized in one place makes it easier to focus on the work in front of them. The bookshelves have also aided us in this area.

The clipboards allow for flexible seating around the classroom, so that students always have a place to write. The earbuds are used every day when we work on our adaptive computer program. Many students were relieved that earbuds were provided for them.

We are all so grateful for your donations and providing us with materials we need to be successful.”

  • Headphones Keep Students Focused!

    Funded Jan 22, 2019

Your generosity never ceases to amaze me! With your help and your donations, my class was able to procure headphones and cord-splitters for use with our laptops. Because we are not a one-to-one classroom yet, sharing technology can be stressful and distracting. By having their own sets of headphones, each student is able to focus on their programs and Online learning without others being distracted. The cord-splitters allow several students to share a laptop at once. My students have been so happy to use the technology you donated to us.

Thank you for supporting our learning and growth.”

  • Document Camera Needed for Writing

    Funded Sep 19, 2017

From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU for your donations. With your help, I was able to procure a document camera for my classroom. We use this piece of technology every single day, without fail. The document camera allows me to model ideal writing strategies and behaviors for students, as well as provide them with templates for writing notes for Literacy, Writing, and Social Studies in different formats. The camera also allows me to display student work quickly, so that they are able to learn from each other. Students are seeing me write in real time, which has a more powerful impact on learning than simply copying from a chart.

The camera has many great features, but the students especially enjoy the fact that I can record video and play it back for them. (This has helped me too - I don't have to repeat all directions every single time a student asks!)

Several of the students love to use the camera themselves - they become mini-teachers, which is exciting to see. Each student has their own personal teaching style, and there are many instances where the other students learn something new from their "teacher."

Our document camera has also helped the students who suffer from visual impairments become more active and engaged in class. Students do not use the excuse, "I can't see" because another student or myself will zoom in or out, provide more focus, or replay the video for them. The expectations for classwork have been raised higher, and students are reaching the high goals set for them.

We would not have been able to afford this document camera without your generosity. Thank you!”

  • Building Creative Collaboration Through "The Outsiders" Novel Study

    Funded May 1, 2017

Thank you so much for all of your donations! Your donations helped us procure a class set of the novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. Last year's 7th grade students began the books towards the end of the year after we finished our state standardized assessments. This year, I decided to begin the year using The Outsiders as a read aloud, as a way to get students engaged and interested in reading. Although the times of year differed, the results with both sets of students have been very similar.

As we begin to the read the novel together, students make connections between the lives of the characters - Ponyboy, Johnny, Dally, and the rest of the greasers - and their own lives. Each time we read a new section, students have shared how the events of the story remind them of some events in their own lives, how the struggles that the characters face are so similar to theirs. It has been eye-opening for me as an educator as I realize what some of my students struggle with, but I'm glad that my students are able to identify with the characters and are so willing to speak about their experiences.

In both groups of students, I have had students say aloud and write privately to me that although they never enjoyed reading before, they LOVE The Outsiders. I hope that enjoying and loving this book will open their eyes to the joys of literature and reading. This enjoyment and engagement in reading would not have been possible without your generous donations.

Beyond text-to-text and text-to-self connections, the students are digging deeper and using critical thinking skills to dissect the themes of the novel. Students are constantly supporting their ideas with evidence and details from the text, which is a standard that students are tested on frequently. I know this learning would not have been possible with a different novel; it was imperative to get students excited to read first. The Outsiders provides my students with an exciting and relatable story line. And it is all thanks to you!”

  • Building a Library to Build Readers

    Funded Aug 24, 2016

You are amazing! Thanks to your donations, three brand new bookshelves arrived in the 7th grade classroom where I spend most of my week. The two tall bookshelves and one smaller shelf have dramatically improved the appearance and organization of the classroom I share with my 7th graders. Your donations have made it possible for the 7th graders to better learn systems of organization and are helpful in teaching procedures that make our classroom run smoothly.

Every day, students independently use the smaller bookshelf to collect and organize materials - such as their Literacy work-books and Social Studies textbooks. As each day goes by, I see more and more students taking ownership in how the shelf "should" look and re-organizing it to better fit the needs of the class. The two larger bookshelves house our growing classroom library. Students search the shelves, which are organized alphabetically and with a sticker system, for books that interest them. The bookshelves have been such a blessing in our classroom! Without them, books would be in disorganized piles around the room, due to a lack of storage.

Our class cannot thank you enough for taking the time to donate to our project and for your generosity. Please know that with your donation, students are able to work in a classroom that is organized, safe, and clean. I am so thankful for all of you and the way you have helped my students.”

  • Technology Needed for Centers!

    Funded Nov 24, 2015

Thank you all so much for your generous donations! With your help, Chromebooks were ordered for my two classes. The students were so excited when the Chromebooks finally arrived, and were so curious about what would we use them for. Both classes have gotten a lot of use out of the set of four Chromebooks! We have used them as part of centers and to introduce students to websites such as Khan Academy and MobyMax. Students have used Google Docs to share responses and explain what they have learned. Students have used Google to identify common types of minerals during Science class. When my students use the Chromebooks, they learn important skills - not just in content areas like Math, Science, and Writing, but how to safely use technology to their benefit. Your donations are helping the students to become 21st century learners, and providing them with key skills they will use as they go through school and life. We thank you so much from the bottom of our hearts!”

  • Document Camera Needed!

    Funded Sep 14, 2015

Thank you so much for your generous donations. With your help, my classroom was able to procure a document camera. This tool has been invaluable to us the past few weeks. We recently started a new mathematics curriculum that is workbook/textbook based. The classroom I inherited came with a SmartBoard, but no way for me to show the students exactly what page we were on, what problem we were working on, or the steps to solve a problem. I have little whiteboard space to write on. With the document camera, all of that has changed.

Now my students can see what page and problem we are working on. They can copy strategies, projected by the document camera, to their own notebooks. Any problems can be solved in our workbooks or on other pieces of paper, without us worrying about running out of space. This tool has been so helpful, especially for my students with visual impairments. They can focus clearly on what we are learning and are able to see the board better.

The document camera has also allowed my students to assume the role of teacher. My students can come up to the camera with their notebooks or work pages, then show and explain how they solved a problem to their peers. My students are gaining valuable public speaking experience, and are learning how to debate with each other when they disagree with answers or spot a mistake. Students who did not want to raise their hand now get excited about teaching their classmates!

It has been amazing to see how this tool has transformed my teaching and my students' learning. We could not have achieved this without you! Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts.”

  • Scientists in Training!

    Funded Dec 11, 2014

Thank you all so much for your generosity. Without you, I would not have been able to provide my students with Scholastic News, Scholastic Super Science, and Scholastic Science Spin magazines. The students are very impressed with the resources. They love to learn new vocabulary, view the amazing photographs, and read about topics that interest them. So far, the majority of my students love to read about animals - but many of them also love to read about real-life kids and the experiences they face.

My students and I use these magazines during our Reading and Writing classes, and to supplement our Science curriculum. We read the articles, answer questions provided by the magazines, and discuss the issues and problems that the article presents. Many of the students show signs of thinking critically about problems presented in the articles, which was my hope for them. They are learning so much about the world outside their neighborhoods. It is amazing to see them thinking about the careers in science they might like to have. It's also rewarding to see them make connections between the stories we are assigned to read from the textbooks and the articles. Even if we read an article a month ago, many of the students continue to remember what they have learned. (As an example - we read an article about the extreme drought in the southwestern United States, especially in California. A few students have taken it upon themselves to check with their relatives in California to ask what their weather has been like and how they are working to conserve water!)

These magazines are so important to our class. This year in Arizona, a school's annual yearly progress will be measured by how well 4th grade students do on the state Science assessment. This has put a lot of pressure on my students, and they are determined not to fall short of their goals. The magazines not only introduce science in kid-friendly terms, but present the topics in engaging and entertaining mediums. The subscriptions you helped us purchase give us access to the Scholastic website, and the students enjoy watching short videos that relate to the articles (and playing the games that reinforce certain skills!)

My students and I are so grateful for your help and generosity. Thank you, thank you, thank you from the bottom of our hearts!”

  • Reluctant Readers' Need for Graphic Novels

    Funded Aug 27, 2014

My students absolutely LOVE all of the graphic novels that we received in our package. There is always a waiting list for the Lunch Lady and Manga Math series. The students have told me how much fun they have reading the novels. One student told me that the Lunch Lady series "made me laugh so hard my stomach hurt." I've seen other students collaborating to write and draw a graphic novel like the Lunch Lady based on our school! Other students have shown more of an interest in history and reading biographies after reading the Historical Figures graphic novels.

In our classroom, the students enjoy having all of these options to choose from when choosing their books for "reading stamina" (what we call independent reading). Many of my students do not have books at home, so making sure that there all options available to reach all of my students, no matter their reading levels and abilities, is important. My students read all of these books independently during reading stamina time in class and at home. Many have told me how they enjoy reading parts of the books (or sometimes the entire book!) to siblings and parents at home. This proves to me how much enjoyment the students are getting out of these novels.

Each day, I can see how the graphic novels are reaching more of my students. My most reluctant students who often do not participate in class come to tell me about the book they are reading. I see students comparing the characters and problems in the series they've read, and then recommend books to each other. I watch as students who came in the beginning of the year with little reading fluency check out book after book and read more pages each day. I can hear students read aloud and access vocabulary that they would not have known had it not been for these novels. Students are gaining knowledge of history and important figures, and asking more and more questions when we discuss social studies. I am so happy to see the growth in my students that these books have afforded them.

None of this growth would be possible without your generosity. My students and I thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all of the items, books and book bins, that you have provided us with. You have helped to build our classroom library, something that we treasure, and for that, you have our eternal thanks.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Marchiondo
