Busy Library Needs Books!
Funded Jan 26, 2022September feels like a very long time ago, but when we came back to school after the long months of remote learning, there was a sense of renewal, of freshness, of appreciating what used to be taken for granted.
As the librarian in a busy New York City high school, I was delighted to see so many students making a beeline to the library. I would take a look down my stacks, and find students sitting on the floor reading. It was magical. I had spent many hours during remote learning promoting digital books and our digital collection, but the students never got as excited about digital as they were about physical books.
The students found books to read, but quite often they were stymied in finding particular books, because many books were lost due to the pandemic and shut down. Your generosity remedied that problem. We were gifted copies of the books that the students were seeking, and your generosity is so appreciated. When a student's interest is piqued, and they request a particular (good:) book, we must seize the moment. Children's lives are changed by books and libraries, and then the world is changed.
Thank you so much!”

Funded Jun 14, 2018On Monday, October 29th, the students who are in my book club had a very special experience - one that they will not forget. Thanks to your generosity, they had each received a copy of Gae Polisner's book - "In Sight of Stars". Ms. Polisner came to our school, and spent three wonderful periods with my students. The discussion that they shared was fascinating, and perceptive and far-reaching. The students learned about the craft of writing, how to become a published author, and of course we discussed the book and the characters. Ms. Polisner shared the inspiration of this book, and also her previous books. The students had their (hard-covered!) books autographed, and we shared pizza and cookies with Ms. Polisner.
At the end of the day, Ms. Polisner spent a period discussing creative writing with the students, and giving them a chance to create. These students were excited to have the book that they would keep, to meet an actual published and acclaimed author, and to get writing tips from her. The other adults in the room, myself included, were very gratified to see the students so connected and involved and it gave us renewed faith in the future.
Thank you again for your generosity. The students will not forget this day.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Makler
Meet the Author at School!!
Funded May 7, 2018On Monday, October 29th, Gae Polisner came to our school, and spent three amazing, wonderful periods with my students. Thanks to the generosity of all of you, each student had a copy of her newest book, "In Sight of Stars". We had an invigorated, spirited discussion of the book, of writing, of breaking into the "writing business" and basically of life. If anyone needed an optimistic view of the future, they would do well to observe our afternoon. My students are bright, motivated, perceptive, and curious.
Ms. Polisner is a very engaging speaker, and her writing is superb and immediate. My students are members of my book club, and they were so excited to receive the books and to get to meet a real author!
We had pizza with her, and the students got to have their books signed. At the end of the day, we had a creative writing session with Ms. Polisner. It was a wonderful day, and it could not have happened without your generosity. Thank you so much!!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Makler
