The materials will be used during class read alouds, "First Chapter Friday's," SEL lessons, and be available for checkout at any time, for any student. The students will learn about people who paved the way in our American history. The people whose names are often left out of the conversation. They will learn about the stories, real or fiction, of being Black in America.
My students are far more engaged in their learning when they recognize the purpose behind it. These stories, the characters within them, and the thematic elements they bring to any conversation, contribute to the overall growth of a 7th grader. My goal isn't to have every student leave my classroom as avid readers, but it is my goal to have each student, no matter who they are or where they come from, leave my classroom having learned, been loved, and learned how to love. I believe literature can do that, especially literature that opens a window to the people who represent our community.
The benefit these students will obtain is a wider view into the world. On Tuesday's and Thursday's during my Mustang Minutes time I will be teaching my students multiple lessons around compassion and critical thinking. I will use the "March" trilogy to demonstrate how John Lewis made a difference by marching with thousands of other people. I will incorporate circles into our conversations to create room for compassion, for both the students in the room, the characters in the books, and the people in our lives, whether we know them personally or not.
