Our 7th Grade novel selection has been here since our school opened about 30 years ago. Many of the novels we have available are outdated and unrelatable for my 21st century learners. "Ghost" by Jason Reynolds is more or less the story of many of my students real lives. When I read this book I thought of how many of my students would relate to this and knew this was a must have novel for our classroom. I want novels that my students will enjoy reading to help build life-long readers. The messages and diction in this novel fit the demographics of my students and would be sure to engage my diverse range of kids. We would use this book for a novel study, where students will analyze themes, gain reading comprehension skills, and be exposed to real world and cultural experiences. The purposeful questions that will be posed during this novel study will spark thoughtful and in-depth class discussions. Myself and the other 7th Grade Language Arts teacher on campus would love to read this book and align curriculum!
