One area my students struggle the most with is reading. The students may have about a total of nine minutes per day of reading. Having taught in a high school and elementary school, I can now see where some of the break down is when it comes to students taking standardized reading tests. If students are only reading about nine minutes per day, how can we expect them to read multiple passages during testing time. I'm requesting six mini-stationary bikes and two recumbent bikes in order to set up active reading stations in the classrooms, library and other locations throughout the building. At the reading stations, students will be able to read books and ride the stationary bikes. Having these stations will keep students active and eliminate the need to be up and down, moving around the room, and leaving the classroom because of excessive energy stores. In my Physical Education class, students are always active, but we also want to promote opportunities to read and increase literacy.mThe addition of reading stations throughout the school would give my students a much needed boost of reading practice while still being active and not focusing on when reading time is going to be over.
