As Fred Rogers (Mr. Rogers) once said, “Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children, play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood.” I could not agree with him more! For more than a decade, there has been a strong push for increased rigor in Kindergarten curriculum. Play has been removed almost completely, and many children are lacking in their oral language and social skills development. Thankfully, my state is encouraging Kindergarten teachers to bring play back. I plan to add a kitchen play area to my classroom where my students would be encouraged to interact, converse, and problem solve appropriately with each other. By using the play food, dishes, pots, microwave, and table set, my students would be using their imaginations, socializing, and communicating in a developmentally appropriate setting. For example, the children might create a grocery list, pretend to go to the grocery store, sort and put away the food items, prepare a meal, set the table, eat, and clean up afterwards. These play activities would provide countless opportunities for them to creatively collaborate and have fun too.
