I have a fundamental belief that quality education includes rigorous science education. Providing students rigorous science education will be a goal that I work on throughout my entire teaching career. It is not easy to accomplish. In order to provide my students with more rigorous science education, this year I have decided to teach Advanced Placement Biology or introductory college-level biology. Unfortunately, teaching college-level science requires college-level lab materials and this is challenging to accomplish at my small Title I high school. Through this project, I hope to bring many college-level labs to my students in AP Biology. I have requested materials so students can transform bacteria, which will allow them to understand how gene expression and gene regulation works. I have requested supplies so that we can actually watch the evolution of plants in our classroom. I have requested supplies that will allow my students to run DNA through gel electrophoresis, where they can apply their knowledge of the structure of DNA and principles of heredity to identify what kind of traits a person may have. These experiences will be invaluable to my students. Not only will they learn biology content at a deeper level, but they will also learn lab skills and techniques that will better prepare them for college-level lab courses.
