My students are coming to me from a variety of different backgrounds with one common feature: they all struggle with reading. I have ESL students who are struggling daily with language barriers and unfamiliar environments. I have "troubled" students who have just been pushed through the system who are still at a 3rd grade reading level. Most of my students come from an unstable home life. My goal with this project is to provide these kids a place where they can feel comfortable and acknowledged for their own unique learning habits. By acquiring all new supplies and furniture I hope to show these students that someone cares, that someone wants them to succeed. The LLI (Leveled Literacy Intervention) program is a structured program full of daily reading and discussing books on various topics. I teach in small groups so quaint reading centers will help when facilitating these discussions. The use of small high tables and stools will give students who need to stand or sit differently a chance to do so. Also, the exercise balls can be used by students who need to move around in order to focus. The overall goal is to provide different seating arrangements so that each student with a different learning preference can be comfortable and more willing to read. The lap desks are essential for each different seating arrangement to work so students can always be able to write with ease. Creating an awesome reading center is one way we can get high school students to enjoy and take reading seriously. These kids are our future and right now they are not able to comprehend that.
