My students dislike reading because it is something that they struggle with. When my students are able to be exposed to a text that they both enjoy reading and can relate to, they will gain a new appreciation for reading.
Giving my students the gift of reading will open doors for them. Through reading The Hate U Give, my students will have the opportunity to relate to a text in a way that they have never been able to before. The Hate U Give will give students a glimpse into a view of the world that so many of them live in and feel connected to. Students will look at social justice issues and think of ways that they can be activists in their own communities.
