This school year I would like to begin with a well equipped literacy center. By creating innovative ways to differentiate classroom instruction, I will be exposing students to Five Essential Components that lead to successful reading. According to statistics, students who are read to at home daily have a substantial advantage over students who are not read to daily. Children in families with incomes below the poverty line are less likely to be read to aloud every day than are children in families with incomes at or above poverty. We all know and understand what that means. That means our students will start school at a disadvantage. Our students will not know how to spell their names, recognize basic alphabets and numbers, all of which most students should know by Kindergarten. I would like to make a difference by reading to my students daily and having them read to using various methods and strategies. A basic technology device such as a listening center, is simple, easy to use and can impact a large volume of young learners. Your generous donation of our listening center and books will not only increase literacy across the curriculum, it will increase their desire and love for reading. The listening center will accommodate 4-6 students. A story will be read to the students simultaneously while they learn to track words, turn pages, develop team building skills, recognize alphabets, numbers, words, and build vocabulary fluency, etc. Kindergarten students need fun, engaging and interactive activities to keep them focused. I would like to create a wonderful world of learning by infusing all components for a literacy-rich environment. It will give every student the opportunity to progress at their own pace and enhance student learning across all content areas.
