  • Literacy Adventures in Learning with VersaTiles

    Funded Jan 7, 2020

When we first received our box of Versatiles for Literacy, I remember how my students met it with so much curiosity and excitement. They were wondering how a set of puzzles with colored tiles could help them become better readers. Well, it didn't take long before I saw how highly engaged they were in the activities, including some children who struggle with reading. These Versatiles were amazing in the way that it challenged my students, motivated them to read passages on a variety of topics, and even encouraged teamwork as some children would pair up to solve a puzzle together. The Versatiles fit in beautifully with our independent work time during our English-Language Arts block, and they quickly became a favorite go-to activity during that time.

Thank you so much for giving so generously, for your caring heart for students and public education.”

  • Sound, Song, and Stories

    Funded Aug 23, 2019

Now that the school year has ended for us, I can look back on how your kindness has truly blessed our classroom. Thanks to your generous support, my students were able to enjoy music, storytelling, and literature in all their fun and richness. The musical instruments you provided--the resonator bells and sound shapes--became such an integral part of performing many texts in a reader's theater format, and helped children deepen their comprehension and engagement. On many occasions, we would consider a story we were reading, decide which instruments to play that could represent certain characters, events, or moods to enhance that story, and bringing it all together into a short performance piece.

Thank you for helping to make our learning journey such a joyous one.”

  • Having A Blast with Tie-Dye!

    Funded Dec 24, 2019

All our second graders truly had a blast with tie-dye, as the title of our project suggests. This past Monday, our three classes dyed our shirts in three one-hour rotations, and with the help of teachers, aides, and parents, the children were able to create beautiful shirts that we could wear for class group photos and on our next fieldtrip later on in the spring. This was certainly a concerted community effort!

Students were so fascinated by the creative process of tie-dying, drawn by the variety of bright colors of dye they got to select from the kit, as well as learning how folding or twisting a shirt in different ways will create different designs and patterns. They were so focused on following each step correctly, eagerly waiting for the dye to set into the fabric for 24 hours after our day of tie-dye! I even got to tie-dye my own shirt for the first time, so it was a learning experience for me as well.

The project brought much joy to the teachers and students. After the shirts were set out to dry, I saw many children wearing their shirts the very next day. I believe this shows how meaningful this project was to them, that they got to create something to keep and be proud of.

Your kindness and support of our 2nd grade classrooms truly had an impact, and I thank you.”

  • Storytelling With Puppetry

    Funded Oct 27, 2018

Wow. Our storytelling project has been a rich, year-long exploration of creativity that's exceeded my expectations, thanks to your generous support and kindness. I remember back in the fall and getting our packages from Amazon, and allowing my students to take turns choosing a puppet to pull out of the boxes. Their delight and fascination was palpable, and we couldn't wait to use them!

As a teacher, I can say that the puppets were an important teaching tool for practicing reading, oral language, and writing. Everyday, my students would ask, "Can I read with a puppet?" or, "Can I write a story about how my puppet goes an adventure?" I taught my students the essential elements of a good narrative, namely characters, plot, problem and solution, and students would apply what they learned to writing stories and plays, which they would perform for the class using the puppets. I also watched my students' confidence grow as readers as they used the puppets as reading buddies, or with another classmate to read to each other. Using the puppets was a wonderful way to develop the skill of reading aloud with expression, fluency, as well as reading comprehension.

For the students, the puppets have been more than just tools for learning--as one student told me, they have become their friends. When children were feeling sad or lonely, they would go to their favorite puppet for comfort, or use a puppet to comfort a friend. The puppets helped make our classroom a safe place where children could solve problems, find space to communicate their emotions, and build community.

And this is just the beginning of our classroom journey with storytelling. As I look back on this year, I see that there's even more inspiration and potential to what children in my class can do with puppets. I thank you for providing my classroom with that inspiration.”

  • BrainPOP for English Learners

    Funded Aug 30, 2017

To say "thank you" doesn't seem like enough when I think of the tremendous impact your donations have made in my classroom. Before the school year started in August, I knew I would need lots of support to help the English learners in my class. Many of them came from China and Japan knowing no English beyond "hello" and "My name is . . . ," and besides being able to identify the basic letters of the alphabet, they could not read or write in English, much less comprehend it. I was also keenly aware that because these children did not yet know the language, they would feel a great sense of frustration and discomfort at not being able to communicate and socialize easily with their English-speaking classmates. The language barrier was indeed a daunting hurdle for me and my students to overcome.

Enter your generous gifts of support, which provided us with two Chromebooks and an online subscription to BrainPop ESL, and opened up so many possibilities for these children. The class started using these materials in September. BrainPop ESL gave my students from China, Japan, Saudi Arabia, and Russia the ability to engage in the English language in a highly interactive way, by watching videos that told humorous narratives they could easily understand and relate to, learning grammar and vocabulary with fun games, and recording themselves as they practiced speaking phrases and sentences with the notebooks you helped provide. Even my native-speaking students benefited from the notebooks, using them daily to access an online site called Lyrics2Learn that integrates music and reading to improve comprehension and practice applying test-taking strategies.

Thanks to your gift, all my students have come such a long ways from where they began at the beginning of the year. My Chinese and Japanese students can converse with their peers with confidence, ask questions to seek out knowledge, understand a joke and laugh along with the class, and independently write their own stories and poems. One of my Chinese students started reading at a kindergarten level and can now read 4th grade text (bear in mind that I teach second grade!). These children feel a part of our classroom community because they can understand, and they can communicate! They have learned and progressed so much.

And so I say again, thank you--and although those words do not go far enough, please know that your gifts of support mean more than I can possibly express.”

  • Jazzing Up Learning With Creative Dance and Music

    Funded Jan 29, 2017

Wow, thank you so very much for the wonderful learning opportunities you have provided for my students this year! Your gift of the scarves, ribbon wands, and rhythm sticks were such a hit with the children, enhancing their learning and love of language arts and dance.

Our class used the materials regularly throughout the spring semester. We first used the rhythm sticks to spice up our vocabulary and spelling activities through games that used rhythmic patterns and poems. One of the things I was most excited about this year was using the ribbon wands to teach new dances to the children using music from Tchaikovsky's "The Nutcracker," and Leroy Anderson's "Syncopated Clock." The dances were perfect brain breaks for the students, not to mention happy opportunities for them to be exposed to many diverse genres of music. Through creative movement, I was also able to teach them vocabulary and concepts such as "staccato" and "legato" to describe the texture, tempo, dynamics, and other characteristics we'd hear in the music. The greatest highlight of the year was using the ribbon wands for a grade level dance I choreographed to "Try Everything," a song performed by Shakira which all the second graders performed in our school-wide dance festival last month.

This dance project was the perfect way to get the children to express themselves creatively and develop their confidence. My students experienced so much joy through dance (even the ones who at first said they didn't like to dance!). I had students who wanted to practice the dances at home and come back the next day, ready to perform for their classmates because they loved using the ribbons and scarves so much. If only you could have seen the energy, the beauty, and the delight we were able to experience from this project, developing more confidence and poise as active members of our classroom community.

Undoubtedly, these tools will continue to be an integral part of my teaching in the arts in future years. I will be expanding our dance and musical repertoire and thinking ways to integrate lessons with writing and other core subjects.

All of you were instrumental in helping my students truly shine this year. Once again, thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Long

  • Learning Through Dance and Music-Making

    Funded Jan 22, 2016

Wow, thank you so very much for the wonderful learning opportunities you have provided for my students this year! The day our packages of creative dance supplies arrived in Room 17, the children were brimming with excitement and curiosity. The moment we opened the boxes to find the scarves, the wrist ribbons, parachute, xylophone, and the creative dance instruction books for teachers, the students' smiles told me immediately that we would be building some fun memories and rich experiences together.

Our class used the materials that same week. We first used the scarves to learn simple choreography to Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana," a dance that has long been in Room 17's dance repertoire. However, one of the things I was most excited about this year was using the teacher handbooks, because I was able to learn and teach new dances to the children using music from Saint-Saen's "Carnival of the Animals," Tchaikovsky's "The Nutcracker," and Leroy Anderson's "Syncopated Clock." The dances were perfect brain breaks for the students, not to mention happy opportunities for them to be exposed to many diverse genres of music. As for the ribbons, we used these to visualize musical patterns we would hear in classical pieces like "The Russian Dance" from Tchaikovsky's "The Nutcracker." The parachute was an absolute blast for my class! It was a wonderful tool for teaching listening skills and teamwork. For example, my class had to listen deeply in order to become familiar with different musical sections to pieces such as the "William Tell Overture," and perform a variety of movements with the parachute that corresponded to each section. The greatest highlight of the year was using the wrist ribbons for a grade level dance I choreographed to "We Are One," a song performed by Pitbull and Jennifer Lopez which all the second graders performed in our school-wide dance festival last month.

This dance project was the perfect way to get the children to express themselves creatively. My students experienced so much joy through dance (even the ones who at first said they didn't like to dance!). One mother even commented, after watching her son perform, "I've never seen him dance with so much energy! And he hates dancing!" If only you could have seen the energy, the beauty, and the delight we were able to experience from this project, developing more confidence and poise as active members of our classroom community.

  • Dancing Our Way to Learning

    Funded Jan 18, 2015

Wow, thank you, thank you, so very much for the wonderful learning opportunities you have provided for us this year! The day our packages of creative dance supplies arrived in Room 17, the children were brimming with excitement and curiosity. The moment we opened the boxes to find the scarves, the streamers, and the bean bags, the students' smiles, and their comments of "Whoa!" and "They're so pretty!" told me immediately that we would be building some fun memories and rich experiences together.

Our class used the materials the very next day. We first used the bean bags for music games I had learned from some professional development training I received from my school district earlier this year. Our favorite game was called "Pass the Beat," a cooperative activity (and a very challenging one!) in which the children had to listen for the rhythm of a particular musical piece and pass a bean bag in time with the music from one person to another. The musical games were perfect brain breaks for the students, not to mention wonderful opportunities for them to be exposed to many diverse genres of music, from big band jazz to classical waltzes. As for the streamers, we used these to visualize musical patterns we would hear in classical pieces like "The Russian Dance" from Tchaikovsky's "The Nutcracker." But by far the most beloved tools proved to be the gorgeous, flowing scarves, which we used for interpreting musical patterns in much the same way as the streamers. The greatest highlight of the year was using the scarves for a grade level dance I choreographed to Katy Perry's "Firework," which all the second graders performed in our school-wide dance festival last month.

This dance project was the perfect way to get the children to express themselves creatively. My students experienced so much joy through dance (even the ones who at first said they didn't like to dance!). If only you could have seen the energy, the beauty, and the delight we were able to experience from this project, and how students who could barely speak a word of English made astonishing creative breakthroughs, developing more confidence and poise as active members of our classroom community.

All of you were instrumental in helping my students truly shine this year. Once again, thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Long
