Exposing the Truth About Bullying!
Funded May 31, 2012It has been a wish come true to have your prestigious companies finance our trip to see the documentary Bully. The truth is that our school is located in a tough community and our students are confronted by bullies each day whether it is in school, on the playground, or in their neighborhood. There is a belief among the some of the students that bullying makes you look cool or that it is a joke and that there are no real consequences for bullying. Exposing the students to this film has allowed them to see both the short term and long term effects of bullying. It is not just about what happens to the person who is the bully but what are the emotional, physical, and psychological effects of the victims of bullying. This movie allowed those students who thought bullying was funny or cool to be empathetic and really think about what they have done to each other in the past and what they think about doing to one another in the future. Bully was a wake up call to a lot of students. After watching the movie and having a discussion there was a sense of stronger community in our classrooms and there were higher expectations for respect amongst the students. Many students were quicker to stand up for themselves and others who were not strong enough to stand up to the bullying. I cannot thank you enough for helping to make this educational experience possible. With your help we have gotten the opportunity to educate our students and in turn they can educate their families and friends in their communities over the true consequences of bullying. ”

This classroom project was brought to life by Wells Fargo and one other donor.Creating a Brighter Future Through Literacy
Funded Oct 13, 2010It has been a while since we received the materials needed for our classroom and I must say that we are all truly thankful and blessed to have received your support. The majority of the students (sadly enough) have not had many opportunities to use dictionaries in the past. I was doing a writing lesson where my students needed to use the dictionaries and I actually had to postpone the lesson for the next day because the students were excited and in awe to flip through the pages of the dictionary, find new words, analyze the illustrations and discover the features of the dictionary. For some students this was the very first time they ever saw a dictionary. For a lot of students their spelling has significantly improved. They use the dictionaries when editing their writing and they use them as they read and come across words they have never heard before. When engaged in literacy centers, a lot of my 4th grade students who were reading at a first grade level have had a boost in their self-esteem and actually feel more like they belong in my classroom because they are able to listen and follow along using the fourth grade chapter books that were provided (along with the cd where the kids can listen to the story). The students get paired up with other students who are reading at a fourth grade level to so they can receive help with the comprehension of the chapter books they are reading. This resources has made all of my students love to read and want to spend more and more time reading. It is expected that students will significantly improve in their reading all thanks to your generosity.
We are all very thankful for your support and hope that you will continue to help fund other projects across the nation. Without your support and Donor's Choose, it would be extremely difficult to get the basic resources teachers need in order to continue to teach and keep students engaged in learning. Things are getting more and more difficult due to this economic climate and the budgets for public schools are suffering. Please continue to spread the word and invite others to help all public school children across America who are in desperate need of educational resources.
Have a wonderful holiday season. Thank you again.”
