Hygiene Products for All-Girls Brooklyn Public School
Funded Sep 23, 2024As you can see, our classroom is large, colorful, and stimulating. However, it is also too cold from A/C we can't control, or too hot from heat we can't control. I had an idea (from the daily requests!) to provide lotions for our girls' sensitive skin, as well as other, more mundane products such as feminine hygiene articles for the floor emergency drawer, and jugs of hand sanitizer so we weren't waiting for replacements.
The lotions I found were such fun to distribute! Every student had their own choice of scent and color, and there's so many more for when they run out. I found time in each of our five classes to make a little distraction, and they loved it!
When students know an adult cares about their comfort and well-being, it creates an atmosphere of trust that opens the mind and heart to learning. Thank you so much for helping to make that possible.”

Fresh Supplies, Fresh Start!
Funded Aug 9, 2019I'm a little late this year, as my workload increased a LOT, but you've been on our minds. Thanks to you, our young women received a sturdy folder for year-round use in enough colors to satisfy every taste, along with paper and other work supplies. These were distributed on the first day of Global Studies class, and made the girls feel as though they were entering a new level of academics.
These lightweight binder substitutes are used every day, and it's a pleasure to see them personalized and specified. It may not seem like a lot, but these students all travel long distances to our school by subway, and by taking these aspects into consideration, we let them know we see them and understand their needs.
I love starting the school year with a gift. It's so simple, and it goes such a long way.”

Social Studies Supplies - Atlases for All!
Funded Aug 23, 2018Your generosity towards our students has not gone to waste. This year I decided to combine the folders they use every day with the specialized resource of the atlases used at intervals throughout the year.
From the very first assignment, the girls began to master basic research skills such as index search and quadrant plotting. Questions about connectedness, distance and boundaries arose immediately, to universal interest and discussion. This is the second year in a row in which this resource has had such an impact, and it's great to see that some students will treasure it as an unexpected enhancement to their libraries.
Thank you so much to the donors for believing in our students and providing them with these materials. They are worth the investment!”
With gratitude,
Ms. JRob
Fresh Supplies, Fresh Start!
Funded Jul 21, 2017Last year was my first year as a teacher and my learning curve was as steep as any of my students' in this all-girls' public school. This year I was determined to smooth some rough edges which I saw began with an investment in my students' security. If they saw that I believed in them enough to provide them with basic materials for success in our classroom, their investment in their own progress would be that much stronger.
Your donation enabled me to provide a sturdy plastic folder with prongs for loose leaf to be used as a notebook. I prepared each folder with paper, the syllabus, the first homework assignment and the student Atlas from another Donors Choose project. They arrived in a variety of colors and none of the students in three separate classes was disappointed. Several of the girls could not quite believe that I was giving them everything they needed. Some would ask if I needed the folders back, and I loved the smiles when I could tell them, "Nope -
it's all yours." All expressed themselves as ready and happy to bring them to class every day.
...and they have! It's October, and I have not heard one excuse of "no supplies" yet, when necessity dictates note-taking or handout work to begin. I think I have found a new routine to start the year off right.”

Atlases for All!
Funded Jul 26, 2017Last year was my first year as a teacher and my learning curve was as steep as any of my students' in this all-girls' public school. One of the most amazing things to me was how little the girls could appreciate geography as integral to their understanding of social studies. Preparing students for concepts likely to arise in a Regents' examination essay question will find no depth of understanding if their connection isn't visual.
This year I was determined to smooth some rough edges which I saw began with an investment in my students' security. If they saw that I believed in them enough to provide them with basic materials for success in our classroom, their investment in their own progress would be that much stronger.
From the very first assignment, the girls began to master basic research skills such as index search and quadrant plotting. Almost immediately, questions about boundaries, natural features, and place names arose to universal interest and discussion. Our first class "nerd fight" broke out (which I'm happy to observe - to a point) over the continent to which Saudi Arabia belongs. It's been my joy to see some students flipping through the pages on a personal search, unrelated to any assignment.
We will be engaging with this resource all year long, developing and deepening the understanding connected with the students' first questions. The impact from your gift was immediate and will last. I couldn't ask for more.”

Ms. JRob
