All students, regardless of social-economic or cultural status deserve the opportunity to have the best education possible. My students are ever so deserving, also. I teach 24 student scholars in a very low-income, culturally diverse school. Almost half of my students are English Language Learners, meaning their first language is not English, so research shows that listening to stories while physically reading them helps with language acquisition and reading skills. Having these tablets can really open up more fluent English readers in our classroom. I wish there was more time in the day to be able to physically read to my students but with a class of 24 and a very high needs class, the time just does not happen. I plan to use the programs Epic, Starfall, and Teach Your Monster to Read that are all known (and free) programs that have been known to help students read. These can also help my stronger readers listen to harder texts read in a fluent manner. One thing I can say about my students is that they want to be successful but with a tough year of revolving teachers, they are lacking the skills to help them with that. I want to show them that they ARE successful and wanted and loved in order to succeed!
