There are currently 14 laptops for the class, but there are not enough working headphones and mice. Half of the students work on their computer-based intervention programs, St Math and Lexia, while I lead teach the other half. Currently, while I am teaching one group, the computer group is often distracted by what I am doing with the other. If they are not distracted by me, they are distracted by the sounds of their peers and listening to the sounds on the levels they are working on. Working headphones also helps students on Lexia because the program targets skills that are essential to a kindergartners development like rhyming, phonemic awareness, and phonological awareness. For most, their phonemic awareness is sensitive at this age and the headphones will help ensure they are hearing the sounds clearly. If they can clearly hear the sounds, then this will also help with their phonological awareness when the programs asks them to match the sounds to the pictures or letters. Students also have to click and drag for both of the math and reading programs, so working mice will allow my students to confidently choose their answers without relying on the finicky laptop touchpads that sometimes lead to incorrect choices being selected.
