  • Improv for Beginners!

    Funded Dec 3, 2024

Our class has had a blast so far learning how to use our looping pedal when they are creating their own music. What I thought was the best part was watching all these students from different backgrounds collaborate with each other in a new way that I have never seen before. They were helping each other and really working as a team to create their own little songs and parts they wanted to loop. We are still getting used to how to control everything, but the mini-songs they did sounded very nice. The students were feeling super creative and would come to class excited with new ideas to try on guitar and with drumset. The band students were also interested in creating their own songs and are currently in partners with another instrument from their section to create their little duets.

Thank you for allowing a new kind of creativity in our classroom and for fostering a good work ethic in my students. This has really helped them become more like a team, which is a beautiful thing to see in the classroom.”

  • Music for Meditation

    Funded Nov 22, 2024

Thank you for enriching our sound therapy project with your donations! My students are enjoying exploring sound with the different mallets while learning how to make harmonious sounds with the meditation singing bowls. The ocean drum was also a big hit, because most students had never heard of such a thing and they loved how the sound mimicked waves crashing on the beach. A few students asked if they could make recordings and show them to their parents and family. One student had a great idea of using the instruments to make a track to fall asleep to since she has trouble feeling calm at night.

All of this has helped our music club grow so much! They are becoming more comfortable with performing in front of people and learning to be more musical in general. They can hear what sounds compliment each other and which are not so nice together. We will be working with the yoga class in our school to do pop in meditation sessions for the students around big test times and also offer it in our music club once a week after school.

Thank you again for giving my students a glimpse into the world of sound therapy and how they can use their musical skills to help and serve others.”

  • Sound Bath for the Band!

    Funded Sep 27, 2024

At first, my students were EXTREMELY surprised/confused at the instruments we received. They had never heard of these things before, and we're very interested in what they looked like. Once we started playing with them, the students were super enthusiastic about using them and we were able to start a little club of sound therapy students that meets once a week within our already established music club.

My students really love the sounds that the bowls make, and they love how relaxing it is to hear them. Another great point is how easy it is to produce such beautiful tones. They like playing the bowls for each other to take turns relaxing. The rain stick has added another great effect they can use. A project we will work on in the future is making a recording that they can loop for sounds they can fall asleep to. One of our students came up with that idea and she is very enthusiastic about it. We also have a future collaboration with the yoga class in the works, once we master how to play the bowls a little bit more.

I have to say there was an added bonus to this - In the time we created project and the materials actually came, I had two blind students come to my class. They took to these instruments IMMEDIATELY and it has given them such a great sense of making music and exploring with sound. These things are perfect for allowing the girls to feel included and to make music like everyone else. Thank you again for your generosity and for helping to bring music to all students!”

  • Protec Our pBones!

    Funded Aug 19, 2024

Thanks to you we were able to replace many of the torn and broken old pBone cases with beautiful, sturdy new ones! My students were so happy to be able to get rid of the old and unsafe cases. We had a number of students volunteer on their lunch period to help do the instrument transfer, which was very helpful. It was so nice to see students offer to do so out of the kindness of their hearts (many of them were guitar students). They were very surprised when I told them that strangers helped their class, and for once it was not me buying everything! It helped teach them a good lesson that it is nice to help others however you are able.

The band students were very excited to finally be allowed to take their instruments home again to practice! They also had a lot of fun unboxing and just enjoying the fun of something new.

Thank you again for your kindness! You helped a lot of kids get back to home practicing.”

  • Teach the Teacher

    Funded Dec 1, 2020

Thank you so much for your continued support throughout this virtual endeavor!! This past year has been very challenging in many ways, but being a member of this website has given me some great ideas for improving my virtual teaching and having students become more involved in class.

One thing in particular has been trying new and different ways of online music making. This semester I was able to use the software program Soundtrap with my students. MMC provided great resources on ideas for in class-music creation and storytelling. I was able to watch training sessions on Soundtrap and other online sites and software that allow students to be creative and work on their reading/speaking/expression skills. They also often put out newsletters on the latest music technology and other great ideas for online teaching.

I was just informed that I will be teaching a "music technology" class in the fall. I feel like I have a very good foundation on which to build because of this membership, and will have great resources to read up on over the summer to prepare for this new adventure!! Thank you again!”

  • Zoom Into Virtual Music Class

    Funded Aug 5, 2020

This drum machine has been a HUGE help for my online classes. I wanted to keep the students performing even though we don't have any instruments. The best way I could envision us doing this is to learn rhythm through clapping and body movement. I was able to use the Zoom Arq to create cool and fun background music for us to learn and to be able to practice the basics of rhythm. The kids really enjoyed the versatility of it, and how easy it was for me to change the speed of the music. I have students from all different levels, so it was great to be able to slow something down for those who needed a little extra help.

Assignments consisted of me providing them a visual to clap with, and a track that I created with the sequencer. It was a great surprise to them when we did our video game unit and I was able to make an 8Bit rhythm clap along!

I will continue to use this in my online teaching and it has been a great asset in my rhythm video creations. I love being able to do things to go along with the seasons and holidays, so I am very excited to see what I can come up with in the next month.

Thank you so much for supporting my class and making learning rhythm without instruments a much more enjoyable activity for everyone in such a different time.”

I work in a large high school in Brooklyn, NY. We are a Title 1 school, and many students are from a lower economic status. The students in the music program are very enthusiastic and really show a love of music, but we are having difficulties because of our financial situation. There is minimal money for new purchases, and even less for repairs to what we already have. The students have expressed an interest in recording and developing our sound a bit more and I thought this would be a great place to start.
