My students are amazing sponges. The have such a great capacity for learning. I teach kindergarten at an English-Chinese dual language school on the boundary of Chinatown in New York City. Our school is located in an area adjacent to public housing developments and old tenement buildings that have housed generations of new immigrants. The vast majority of my students begin the school year speaking only Chinese or only English. Over the course of the school year, they will become fluent in both languages. We incorporate songs and movement into our daily routine so that my students can learn language organically.
