Our school is a neighborhood school that has a diverse population of students. Among the students, 85% are eligible for free or reduced lunch, 67% speak a first language other than English, 55% are English Language Learners, and 17% receive special education services. Of the students in my reading room, 92% are English Language Learners. All of them began second grade reading below grade level, not because they don't have the capacity to learn but because they lack the right motivation and sufficient resources. The selection of books in our classroom library that are on their reading level is very limited. The topics are viewed as "babyish" (colors, shapes, body parts, etc) and the students have a hard time relating to the books. My students enjoy reading and want to read more but feel a blow to their self-esteem when they have to read the books that are "right" for them.
