  • Mallet Time

    Funded May 9, 2023

The students at Southwest Elementary School have already started using the new mallets! Fifth grade students have been using them to already start learning music for their concert in December and fourth grade will be using them very soon.

All students were pleasantly surprised when I showed them the new mallets and they a few even noticed that we do not need to have tape on them because they have handles. Kindergarten through second grade will easily be able to use our new mallets because there are handles and they are much more comfortable and friendly for children to use.”

  • Mallet Time

    Funded Mar 1, 2022

Having the bass xylophone stands have made the instruments easier to use and move. The kids can help me move the instruments and is at a more comfortable level for them to play. Having the xylophones off the floor also makes it easier for me to demonstrate for everyone to see.

The students were really excited to see the rolling stands because they knew we would play more, and they would be able to help me. We have already started using them this school year and have used them more this year than any other.

The students in fourth and fifth grade will be using them in their up-and-coming concerts in December. We cannot thank you enough for allowing use the opportunity to continue to grow.”

  • Cajon Circle: Let's get our Rhythm On

    Funded Jan 23, 2020

When the students were told we were getting new instruments their faces were priceless and when we received them in the mail and the students saw them it was all smiles. My students absolutely loved playing on our new Cajon's. We were able to learn rhythms in a whole new way! Kindergarten and first grade were the only students that were able to play these fantastic instruments due to COVID-19. We only played them for one class, but that one class was fantastic. Students learned all about rhythm by writing, singing, and then they were able to play on the Cajon's. The exceptional needs students have also enjoy exploring the beautiful sounds of these instruments. We cannot say Thank You enough! These instruments will last for many, many years.”

  • Let's ROCK!

    Funded Aug 29, 2018

Music has been fun, but with these instruments it is a new and even more exciting class. When we were finally allowed back in our school, after Hurricane Florence, I felt like a school girl on Christmas day when I saw the instruments for the first time. The first rotation with my students was amazing and being able to tell them that the school now owned two trumpets, a clarinet, a saxophone, and a flute the kids faces lite up like I have never seen before. One of my favorite times of the school year is getting fourth grade ready to go see the North Carolina Symphony Orchestra. I usually have to barrow several instruments from other schools to allow the students to get to hold and see the instruments in person; but not this year, seeing the students faces and hearing their reactions was priceless, especially when I told them they were going to get the chance to play them. Because of the kind hearted donors for this project I have gotten to see my students grow and become even more excited for Music Class then ever before.”

All of our students want to learn to play an Orchestral instrument. Our classes cannot learn how to play these instruments because we do not have any. In class the clarinet, flute, saxophone, and trumpet will provide the opportunity for the kids to play in the classroom comfortably, a few at a time. This helps them with the basic idea of proper posture, reading music on the staff and it also helps to build the self-esteem that they need to continue learning. As they progress, they will be able to do team and independent work to build musicianship and to be able to practice socialization. We will be able to use them when we perform and learn about the Symphony Orchestra. The drum sets will play many roles in the program for the students. First and foremost, it will give all students a chance to play different instruments during class and help boost students confidence. This will enhance the environment not only in the classroom, but on the concert stage as well. The instruments will play many roles in the program for the students. The first and foremost is to give all students a chance to play different instruments in class. They will learn proper technique and be able to help each other, while learning how to read music written on the staff. This will enhance the environment not only in the classroom but while preparing for middle school and for students learning about the symphony orchestra.
