  • Students Meet World

    Funded Jul 29, 2018

I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart. I head back to Savoonga next week and I can’t wait to share the good news with my students when school commences.

This year I will have 21 kids. The chromebooks, that you have generously contributed to the purchase of, will give my

my students the ability to reach farther than our far-flung geography would.

I thank you again and I can’t wait to share pictures of our project fulfillment sometime this fall.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Hill

  • A Comfy Place to Rest and Read!

    Funded Aug 22, 2017

Our Comfy Place to Rest and Read has been fully integrated into the classroom! As you can see from the photos the kids were ecstatic when the packages came in. We had been studying the tracking info each day during our Morning Meeting. We would find where the box was on a map and take guesses as to when it would arrive. When we finally got to open the boxes, there were gasps of excitement! The pillows were declared to be "big and bright and fun" and the headphones don't hurt anybody's ears or head (a common problem with our previous headphones).

The Comfy Place to Rest and Read made its debut during, and continues to do so, during Centers. Students travel to different stations completing work independently, as a group, or lead by me. The Listening Center is home to the pillows and headphones. Students listen to a recording of a story, following along with their own book, and then complete an assignment that ties into the book.

I am so excited to see how the students have responded and grown using this center. I am seeing growth in fluency and reading comprehension. I attribute a large part of this growth to Our Comfy Place and can't wait to see what a year's worth of the Listening Center will bring us.

Thank you all for helping me to make this idea a reality, bringing some joy, and educational opportunities into Room 116 at Savoonga School!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Hill

teaching Native Alaskan students so close to the Arctic Circle I can (almost) touch it. We love to find and draw connections between the subjects we learn about and the subsistence lifestyle the students experience each day. They teach me tenfold what I teach them and I couldn't imagine it any other way.
