Many of the motions involved in making art, such as holding a paintbrush, stamping and scribbling with a crayon are essential to the growth of fine motor skills in young children. In addition, drawing and sculpting with play dough both develop visual-spatial skills, which are very important in a young child's development. Through various forms of art, students are also able to reflect on their own culture in their creations, developing a positive sense of self. Fostering creativity and individuality is the key to help a child reach their fullest potential. In our classroom, we will use our supplies to create whole-group art projects centered around integrated thematic units and an art center that students will use daily to explore, create and learn. Art has played a significant role in my life and my hope is that I will be able to open my students minds to a whole new world of creativity and expression.
