  • The Gift That Keeps On... Learning

    Funded Sep 17, 2020

This project has made such a tremendous impact in engaging my students during remote learning. The Reader's and Writer's Notebooks have been crucial, and essentially serve the same purpose online as they would have in school. These notebooks are on Google Slides for easy access to students. The students can click the tabs on the first slide and it will direct them to the section of the notebook they need to work on. In this digital Reading Notebook, my students are able to log their reading, and stop and jot their thinking, just as they would have if they were in school. Similarly, in the digital Writer's Notebook, my students draft, revise, and edit all of their writing pieces. For math, I have been able to find colorful, simple math tools/diagrams that aren't overstimulating for my students. We also played Jeopardy as a review for the math test!

It has been quite difficult to have my students complete their work online, for many reasons, but what I have noticed is that the lessons and activities purchased through TeachersPayTeachers, are the ones that have showed the most participation, whether it has been during class or assignments turned in. Thank you again for helping me make remote learning fun and engaging for my students!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Haq

  • Fun & Games & Learning, Oh My!

    Funded Sep 10, 2020

This year's focus in school has been to provide each child with the best learning expereince possible during the days they are in school. Not only have these games contributed to that, but also have made learning hands-on and fun, something that is difficult to do on the days my students learn remotely. In the classroom, anytime a student is done with their reading or writing independent work, they are encouraged to keep their learning going by practicing their sight words with sight word bingo, or practice decoding/spelling patterns with the Roll and Reads or rollercoaster game. In math when my students have completed their independent work, they cannot wait to play the allowance game or multiplication bingo. My students are so motivated to complete their work now, knowing they will have the chance to play a game. They feel as if they are being rewarded, little do they know that they are still learning through these educational games. I cannot thank you all enough for making their learning so enjoyable during this especially difficult time.”

  • I Like Big Books and I Cannot Lie!

    Funded Sep 9, 2020

These books, filled with BIG messages and themes, have been such a beautiful addition to our read-aloud collection! The books I requested celebrate life and diversity, from learning about Chinese folktales, to learning how food brings a Pakistani and Mexican family together, to what we are experiencing today, during the pandemic. My students cannot wait for read-aloud time because they know they will be able to make connections from the books to their own lives. Sometimes, especially with my students, it is difficult for them to express how they really feel about something or they don't always have the right words to say, but with the lessons they have learned from these books, it helps them articulate exactly what they are trying to say. One of my students has a difficult time speaking in full sentences, but his exact words were, "Remember when we read First Day Jitters, yeah that's how I'm feeling right now." I love that I am able to not only help my students express themselves, but also be able to do it through literacy. With all of your support, you have made it possible for my students to engage in meaningful discussions, at the same time apply the lessons learned in their own lives, and for this, I will be forever grateful.”

    With gratitude,

  • VersaTile Learning in a Versatile Classroom!

    Funded Aug 30, 2020

First, I would like to sincerely thank all of you so much for being such incredible, generous donors. At a time like this, where everything is new and uncertain, your support has proven that no matter what, there are kind people out there who want to make a difference in the world.

Having a VersaTile Literacy set in our classroom has transformed our Reading Workshop. My struggling readers are now so eager to complete their work because they know that once they're done, they will be able to complete a fun, hands-on, engaging task and self-assess their work. After completing a literacy activity, students get to see if their answers were correct by checking if their tiles match the picture on the bottom of the activity page. This has tremendously helped build confidence and independence in my students. I have also seen improvement in phonics skills in some of my most low-performing students.

Thank you again so much, from the bottom of my heart, for making my students love Reading Workshop!”

  • Keep Calm & Clean On! (Part II)

    Funded Aug 26, 2020

Living during this pandemic has been such a challenge, but teaching during a pandemic has brought the word "challenge" to a whole new level. With that said, I cannot express how grateful I am to all those who have donated to make my students feel protected during this time, and to make this challenging time just a little easier.

After having numerous discussions about the Coronavirus, how it has affected our lives, and how to keep safe from it, my students were so moved by your actions. They saw that people they didn't know, donated their money to ensure our safety, even when their own safety was at stake. My students were not only appreciative of these supplies, but realized the value of them as well, since some of these items have now become scarce.

Thank you again for making our classroom the safest it can be during this time, and allowing us to instead focus on learning. Stay safe out there!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Haq

  • Series Books Get Readers Hooked!

    Funded Sep 2, 2020

This school year has certainly been like no other. In September, I was so excited to begin a new school year with a new batch of students, hoping for the best. However, with the number of remote students increasing day after day, I was asked to become the fully remote teacher. As a result, my students have yet to experience the joy of reading these series books. They have, however, seen the books virtually and were ecstatic.

The series books in this project were chosen for my students who are beginner readers. Our classroom library did not have any series books that were on their levels, so my beginner readers were unable to apply some of the skills that were being taught during the unit of Character Studies. These reading skills included: traveling with characters across many books, paying attention to characters' behavior patterns, learning about character motivation, providing and justifying character traits, as well as learning life lessons that they can apply in their own lives.

Now, however, with your kindness and generosity, my students will be able to experience a character's journey throughout the series books. I also plan to create book clubs where my students will be able to create meaningful discussions centered on the main characters. Thank you again for making all of this possible for my students.”

  • Hybrid Learning Here I Come!

    Funded Aug 25, 2020

There is no greater feeling than receiving an e-mail stating, "Your project is funded." I have all of you to thank for that. I cannot express how grateful I am to all those who have donated to make this project possible.

My students come from families where very often clothing, supplies, and other essentials are either handed down to them or have to be shared. For them to receive brand new materials, that are theirs to keep, will definitely bring a big smile to their faces. It is especially comforting knowing that the parents will not have to worry about buying these supplies for their children during these challenging times. Each student will receive a notebook and folder for each of the core subjects- reading, writing, math, science, and one for homework. Each student will also receive a pouch filled with glue-sticks, pencils, a dry erase pocket sleeve, and a dry erase marker, that they will be able to travel with back and forth to school. My students are so deserving, and I am beyond ecstatic that they will have these supplies to assist them with learning.

Thank you for believing in me, in this project, and in my students. You have set them up for success. Please continue supporting us on future projects!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Haq

  • Keep Calm & Clean On! (Part I)

    Funded Aug 24, 2020

I would sincerely like to thank DonorsChoose and everyone who helped bring my very first project to life. I am still in utter shock as to how quickly my project was funded. For all of you to take time out and donate, while living in a pandemic, makes your donation even more appreciative. Thank you for being so passionate to want to make a difference in the world.

Although these are special circumstances and we do not yet know if and when schools will re-open, I do know that my students will be so grateful to learn that there are people out there in the world who care about them and their safety. Your donations will keep our classroom up and running while being germ-free. Families of my students will also be appreciative of not having to worry about purchasing these supplies for school.

I hope that you all can consider contributing again in the near future. Now that some of the basic supplies have been accounted for, I plan to work on expanding our classroom library with interesting, diverse books for my students. Once again, thank you all and be well.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Haq

My classroom is a fun and safe space where my students can be themselves, at the same time take risks and learn to be independent. My class comprises of twelve students with disabilities. Some of these disabilities include intellectual disabilities, speech/language impairments, emotional disturbance, autism, and other health impairments. Most of my students are English Language Learners (ELL) and come from a Latino/Hispanic background. They are the most caring, unique, and energetic students you will meet. They are filled with curiosity and are always eager to learn. They love to engage in fun activities, especially those that are hands-on.
