Welcome to The Land of I Can
Funded Sep 12, 2012I cannot believe that it has already been 6 months since the start of school! We have buckled down and gotten right to work, and our brains are noticeably growing.
When the package of supplies arrived I laid everything out on the carpet and explained that some very generous people had heard how hard-working our class was and decided to send us some supplies to help get our year started. I cannot begin to explain how much more a pencil means to someone when they know that it was sent just for them. We carefully portioned out the supplies for each table and our table captains proudly set them on each table. Fifteen minutes into my first lesson that day, someone was already asking when we could use the white boards -- and for good reason! They have completely changed the way that I teach. Now I can see what each child in thinking mid-lesson and adjust as necessary.
I cannot thank you enough for your generosity. I had all but given up on this project and thought that I simply would not have the supplies needed to start the year. Everyone in the Land of I Can remains very thankful.”

Ms. Haley
Yes We Can Read Like First Graders!
Funded Dec 8, 2011In donating to our classroom you have both supported the literacy growth of the students in our classroom and contributed to our Land of I Can. Becoming first grade readers is no easy task, but with the literacy materials that you donated we have been able to open new centers and explore different ways of working with words. Since we received our materials in January, more than 7 children have moved up at least one reading level.
Perhaps one of the most loved activities is the listening center. Students go in groups of four to hear a story from class read to them. I especially enjoy walking by as the page-turn signal plays for the Three Billy Goats Gruff and at least one child let's out a "bahhhh." In addition to the listening center, we also have been able to add individualized books to eat child's book folder. The early readers that we received from you are so much better than the paper books I usually print off the internet!
Our classroom is filled with your energy as we embark on the second half of the year. Although we have a long rode ahead, I am encouraged by your support and generosity. On behalf of myself and all of the Land of I Can-ers, thank you.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Haley
Learning Our ABC's!
Funded Aug 26, 2011This letter is only a small token of gratitude for your generosity. Our carpet has drastically improved classroom culture and management, and added lots of color to our otherwise sparse classroom!
When the carpet arrived my students were in their art class, so I quickly found someone to help me carry it upstairs and set it up. I needed an extra pair of hands because it is huge! I had just a moment to catch my breath and then I went to pick them up. I whispered that there was a big surprise waiting, and then we walked back to class -- the anticipation was palpable. When they walked in everyone exploded in joy and excitement for a full minute. They literally danced with joy. After we settled in, I assigned them each to their own letter and they sat proudly, crisscross-applesauce, on their new carpet.
We grow our brains, listen to stories, and count to 100 on our carpet, and we begin and end everyday with a meeting on our beautiful carpet, described by one student as soft like "marshmallows and fluff." Without your generosity my Kindergartners would go without an important learning tool. We cannot thank you enough!”

Ms. Haley
